Preparation
Please prepare material of your choice (including, if you wish, selections from the season’s repertoire). For those who wish to perform a scene, a reader will be available. Please be prepared to state your starting and stopping places.

Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

Other Dates
Typical rehearsal schedule: Tues– Sun from 10am–6pm or 2pm-10pm until tech begins. Performances: Wed– Sun, with matinee and evening shows, at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown, MA, accessible by major routes and the #70 bus.

Appts are in 5-minute slots, & each AEA Member has 3 minutes to audition. AEA Members without appointments will be seen as time permits

THE ELEPHANT MAN by Bernard Pomerance.

*JOHN MERRICK: (30’s) Suffers from an unknown disease which has deformed his body, isolating him from the rest of society as he earns a living by becoming a side-show attraction. Intelligent and funny. Incredibly lonely.

*DR. FREDERICK TREVES: (40’s) A brilliant upcoming surgeon and teacher intrigued by Merrick’s disorder. Rescues Merrick. Rigid and uncompromising. Victorian gentlemen.

MRS. KENDALL: (21-45) A socialite actress. Open minded, friendly and caring. Friends with Merrick.

CARR GROMM: (40-65) Administrator of the London Hospital. Self-serving.

ROSS: (40-64) Manager of The Elephant Man. A shady, low brow thief and freak show agent.

LORD JOHN: (30-45) Upper Class gentleman involved in shady financial dealings.

PORTER: (30-40) Low class worker.

BISHOP WALSHAM HOW: (40-65) Concerned religious official. Has empathy for others, but only on religious matters.

SNORK: (30-65) A Porter who brings Merrick his meals.

CONDUCTOR: (30-65) Low class worker. Tries to do the right thing but is too closed minded to succeed.

PINHEAD #1: (18-20) Female freak show performer.

PINHEAD #2: (18-20) Female freak show performer.

MISS SANDWICH: (20-50) A nurse repulsed by Merrick’s appearance.

MAN: (30-45) Pinhead manger.

DIANE DAHNER: (30’s - 40’s) Insists on knowing everything. Not good at accepting failure. Loves taking charge. Nick’s second wife.

NICK DAHNER: (30’s - 40’s) Professional architect. Bad at avoiding touchy subjects.

LOUISE PARKER (NEESE): (30’s - 40’s) A bit of a snob. Cares deeply about the welfare of her friends. Not afraid to speak her mind.

TREVOR NEESE: (30’s - 40’s) The joker of the group, just wants to have a good time.

PAM CALDWELL: (30’s - 40’s) Quiet. Not as stylish or up to date as her friends. Very kind and loving.

CHARLIE CALDWELL: (30’s - 40’s) Religious, feels alone, desperately wants to be a father.

JULIE: (17) The babysitter of the Dahner and Neese kids.

THE WHIPPING MAN by Matthew Lopez.
Director: Benny Sato Ambush.
1st reh: 1/7/14. Runs 1/27 -2/16/14. Wed.–Sun., with matinees and evening shows

*SIMON: (50’s) African-American male, former slave in the DeLeon home. A paternal, wise and devout man, he is worn out from the war, worried about the future and concerned about his family, but finds great strength and inspiration in his faith in this newfound moment of freedom.

CALEB: (20’s) White male, Jewish. Civil War Veteran. The only child of the DeLeon family. He returns to a ruined home, himself physically and emotionally crippled, unable to share Simon’s undeterred faith; he carries a terrifying secret. He is filled with unendurable pain and loneliness.

JOHN: (20’s) African-American male, former slave in the DeLeon home. He is a hustler, a survivor, he’s got this brash new sense of freedom; rules and repressions are all gone. He is smart, frustrated and bursting with dreams and secrets.

ON THE VERGE by Eric Overmyer.

MARY: (30’s-40’s)The main lady explorer of the expedition. She is unmarried and considers exploration her unequivocal calling. She shuns intimate relationships and her pent-up sexual inclinations show themselves in her work. She is the oldest member of the lady explorers’ expedition, devoted to studying and experiencing the future, both from an objective and subjective perspective.

FANNY: (30’s-40’s) The most conservative of the group, socially, politically, and morally. She is married to Grover. She generally disapproves of everything she sees and hears in the future, but eventually warms up to the new ideas. She is the second oldest member of the group.

ALEXANDRA: (20’s-30’s) The youngest of the group, allows her age to make up a considerable amount of her personality. Typically forgetful and tends to daydream. Upon encountering a new world, she tries to find alternative meanings, to the irritation of her comrades. She wishes to settle down in the most enjoyable era.

GROVER, ALPHONSE, THE GORGE TROLL, THE YETI, GUS, MADAME NHU, MR. COFFEE, AND NICKY PARADISE: (20’s-40’s) Seeking one versatile actor to play eight different characters: Alphonse, a German who wears a pilot uniform. Grover, a shy banker married to Fanny. The Yeti, a non-speaking frightening beast. The Gorge Troll, a creature who speaks in rhyme and has a possible romance with Alex. Mr. Coffee, a gentlemen dressed in a white suit who informs Fanny of her husband’s decision to move on. Madame Nhu, who gives the three ladies advice. Gus, a fresh-faced American teenager with boundless energy. Nicky Paradise, the seductive owner of a vacation resort.

BERNARD MADOFF: (72) A billionaire financier, inventor, Jewish money maven, financial criminal.

SOLOMON GALKIN: (80) Holocaust survivor, poet, translator, treasurer of his synagogue.

A SECRETARY: ( Female, 40’s) Sincere, hard-working, pleasant-looking, dutiful, bloated with remorse.

TONGUE OF A BIRD by Ellen McLaughlin.

1st reh: 2/18/14. Runs 3/10 - 3/30/14. Wed.–Sun., with matinees and evening shows

MAXINE: (30’s) A search and rescue pilot. Solitary, ironic, and guarded.

DESSA: (30’s) Charlotte’s mother. Tough, without self-pity and utterly focused.

*ZOFIA: (70’s) Maxine’s grandmother, Evie’s mother. A Polish exile, survivor of the 1939 Nazi invasion. Visionary, difficult, and wise.

CHARLOTTE: (12) Dessa’s daughter. Canny, bold and slightly malicious.

EVIE: (mid-late 30’s): Maxine’s dead mother. Cool, wry and lucid.
