NATALIE HALLER (Early 20's): A young woman and an excellent mechanic. She’s much more at home in greasy overalls than a dress.
CHAD (20’s – 30’s): a great-lookin', motorcyclin’, guitar-playin’, leather-jacketed roustabout.
JIM HALLER (mid 40's-50's): Natalie's widowed father. Middle-aged and messy, he still longs for his wife.
SYLVIA (mid 40's – 50’s): the no-nonsense, African-American owner of SYLVIA'S HONKY-TONK.
LORRAINE: Sylvia's teenage daughter. Pretty, smart and a total romantic.
DENNIS (20’s): an awkward young man. He aspires to be a dentist.
MISS SANDRA (30’s – 40’s): the beautiful, intellectual caretaker of the town's museum.
MAYOR MATILDA HYDE (mid 40's-50's): the town's conservative mayor.
DEAN HYDE (plays teen): Matilda's teenage son. He has spent his youth at military boarding schools and he has never disobeyed his mother.
SHERIFF EARL (mid 40's-50's): the law in town. A man of not many words. He loyally follows the Mayor wherever she goes.
MALE AND FEMALE ENSEMBLE play an assortment of sing and dancing TOWNSPEOPLE.

HAROLD HILL Our story's unsuspecting protagonist. A con man, traveling under the auspices of a salesman, he eventually falls in love with Marian Paroo. Charismatic and charming. Male, 25-35 yrs old Range: Ab2 - F4
MARIAN PAROO The stuffy town librarian and music teacher. She is an attractive young lady who eventually falls for Harold Hill. Stuck up. Curious. Female, 20-30 yrs old Range: G3 - A5
MARCELLUS WASHBURN Harold's chummy old friend and former con man, he now lives in River City and is trying to settle down. Male, 30-40 yrs old Range: G2 - A4 . Dancing a plus.
EULALIE MACKECKNIE SHINN Mayor Shinn's peacock wife. A serial gossiper and snob, she has trouble keeping her opinions to herself. Female, 40-50 yrs old Range: D4 - D5
MRS. PAROO Cheerful and always plotting. An Irish widow and mother to Marian and Winthrop. Female, 45-60 yrs old Range: Ab3 - Eb5
CHARLIE COWELL A rival traveling anvil salesman. First seen on train at the start of the show. He returns to town to warn them about Harold and hopefully, make himself a hero and thus earn sales himself. Male late 30’s – 50’s. Non-singing role.
TOMMY DJILAS An attractive, young man from the wrong side of town. He is secretly courting Zaneeta. Male, 18-22 yrs old to play teen. Speaking/Dancing Role
ZANEETA SHINN The Mayor's fresh-faced daughter who is in love with Tommy. Sweet and outgoing. Appears to be daffy at times. Female, 18-22 yrs old to play teen. Speaking/Dancing Role
THE QUARTET: Olin Britt Age: 30-60 Bass , Oliver Hix Age: 30-60 Baritone, Ewart Dunlop Age: 30-60 Baritone, Jacey Squires Age: 40-60 Tenor
THE PICK-A-LITTLE LADIES: Ethel Toffelmier Age: 30-40 Plays the player piano. Is jolly and friendly. She is dating Marcellus. She does gossip, however, with the other ladies in town. Alma Hix Age: 40-55 Wife to Oliver. Gossipy lady who is a buddy of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women. Maude Dunlop Age: 40-55 Wife to Ewart. Gossipy lady who is a buddy of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women. Mrs. Squires Age: 40-55 Wife to Jacey. Gossipy lady who is a buddy of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women.

ENSEMBLE NEWSPAPER READERS; RIVER CITY TOWNSPEOPLE; TRAVELING SALESMEN

PRINCESS FIONA: 20’s-30’s: A beautiful storybook princess with a secret. Needs a strong voice, able to belt clearly and powerfully. Must also be an excellent tap dancer.
DONKEY: 20’s-30’s: The loud-mouthed, wise-cracking hyper sidekick to Shrek. Physicallydemanding role, requires a lot of running, jumping, sliding, and kneeling. Strong baritone R&Bvoice.
LORD FARQUAAD: 30’s: An evil ruler with a Napoleon complex. Must be very adept at comedy. VERY physically demanding role. Does the entire show (including dancing and singing) on his knees. Powerful and wide vocal range (including falsetto).
ENSEMBLE includes featured roles such as Pinocchio (needs to have good falsetto), the Dragon (seeking a fabulous gospel/R&B voice), Thelonious, etc. Ensemble must all be fantastic singers with solid ranges and good with pop/R&B vocal styling, adept at comedy and character work, and solid dancers (including tap).

Edward Bloom – originally played by Norbert Leo Butz – is a loving husband and father who leads a complex imaginary life with many fantasy friends. This leading role requires a 40-year-old actor, singer, dancer who ages from 18 to 60+. It is a tour de force which demands strong acting, great vocal chops, dance skills, a huge heart, a great sense of humor and a vivid imagination. (bari-tenor, G2to G4)
Will Bloom – Edward’s son – is a realist and a pragmatist; and the polar opposite of Edward. His journey of reconciliation with his father is the story of the musical. This is the second male lead and requires a late 20s early 30-year-old who is a strong actor who sings beautifully. (tenor, C#3 to G4)
Josephine Bloom – Will’s wife – is a lovely young woman who provides balance for Will’s pragmatism. With Sandra, she supports and helps guide Will’s journey toward reconciliation with his father. This supporting female role requires a late 20s early 30-year-old who is a strong actor-singer. (mix/belt to C#5)
Amos Callaway – a Werewolf -- is another of Edward’s fantasy friends. Masquerading as a ringmaster of a broken-down circus, he begins as Edward’s tormentor – but then, through Edward’s acceptance, he accepts himself and becomes highly successful. This supporting role requires a late 40 to 50-year-old actor-comic who acts, sings, and moves well. (baritone, C3 to F5, touches a G5)
Don Price – Edward’s childhood frenemy – is an early buddy, bully and rival for Sandra’s hand. This is a supporting roles requires a late 20s to early 30-year-old who is a strong actor with a comic sensibility, a good singer and has movement skills. (baritone, C3 to F#4)
The Witch – a Witch – is the earliest and most fantastic of Edward’s ‘imaginary’ acquaintances who shows him how he’ll die. This supporting role can be any age – but it requires a strong, sexy singer-dancer with commanding acting skills. (mezzo with high belt, useable F3 to F5)
Jenny Hill – the Other Woman – is one of Edward’s early childhood friends who he forgets but then who later becomes the recipient of his kindness. This supporting role also requires a late 30s to early 40-year-old who ages from 18 to 60+ and who is a good actress, singer, and ‘mover.’(mix/belt to E5) Doubles in Ensemble.
Dr. Bennett – Edward’s physician – is the experienced and wise country doctor. As Edward’s contemporary, this role requires a late 50, early 60-year-old actor. Doubles in Ensemble.
Each ENSEMBLE member plays multiple characters. Must sing and dance.
