Media Theatre 2019-20 Season

MATILDA

Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl with extraordinary powers. The daughter of abusive parents, Matilda finds refuge in library books, which she reads quickly and in creating her own stories. Things are no better at school, where Matilda also must face a tyrannical and cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who believes in Crunchem Hall’s motto: “Bambinatum est Magitum,” or “Children are Maggots.” She finds companionship in her teacher, Miss Honey, though well-intentioned, is shy and fragile. Brave little Matilda knows she has to stand up against the adults in her world, and in doing so, discovers her own remarkable powers. Matilda’s bravery teaches Miss Honey and her classmates an important lesson -- that even though life can be hard, “nobody but me is gonna change my story” so “sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.”

Miss Trunchbull– 30s-70s, high baritone, Headmistress of Crunchem Hall. Once a famous athlete, now described as a “gigantic Holy terror”.

Miss Honey– 20s-40s, soprano, adored by every child in her care, secretly Miss Trunchbull’s niece.

Mr. Wormwood– 20s-60s, vocal range approximately top A to f#, dealer in second hand cars, a crook.

Mrs. Wormwood– 20s-60s, strong belt voice approximately up to top F/G, mother of Michael and Matilda, obsessed with amateur ballroom dancing.

Mrs. Phelps– 20s-70s, encouraging local librarian who is Matilda’s confidant.

Rudolpho– 20s-60s, Mrs. Wormwood’s dance partner. Must be a strong social dancer, particularly with tango or other Latin dance experience.

Michael Wormwood– teens-20s, Matilda’s older brother, very deadpan.

Sergei– 20s-60s, baritone, Russian mafia boss who is after Mr. Wormwood

Doctor-20s-60s, high tenor with a comfortable top A.

Escapologist– 20s-60s, high lyric baritone

Matilda– enigmatic, serious, intense.

Buddy
Born a human but raised at the North Pole as a Christmas Elf, Buddy is eager to find his place in the world. He is a child at heart and that child-like curiosity makes him both endearing and gets him into trouble.

Jovie
Buddy's girlfriend. She works at Macy's and has a bit of a cynical outlook on life and love because of the men she's dated. She is caught off guard by Buddy's genuinely big heart.

Walter
Buddy's workaholic father. He is a Children's book writer, but lacks any of the childlike spirit that Buddy has. He is selfish, tense, and generally angry with life.

Emily
Walter's wife. Though she is sweet and willing to take him in, she thinks Buddy is crazy at first. Wishes her husband would spend more time with the family.

Michael
Buddy's stepbrother who is excited to have a new friend and brother. Unlike his mother, he doesn't take much convincing to have Christmas spirit, but like his mother, he wishes his father would spend more time with the family.

Deb
Walter's secretary. Takes an instant liking to Buddy simply for the novelty of it. Though she aims to please and is a bit of a suck-up, she feels under appreciated.

A heavy-set manager at Macy's. He is a good, friendly guy just trying to do his job and get by.

ELEANOR - An American Love Story chronicles the remarkable journey of the shy, insecure aristocrat who was destined to become First Lady of the World. Eleanor Roosevelt - ages 18 to 38, a shy woman with a self-deprecating spunk.

BABY: Three couples on a university campus deal with the painful, rewarding and agonizingly funny consequences of the universal experience of pregnancy and upcoming parenthood. There are the college students, barely at the beginning of their adult lives; the thirty-somethings, having trouble conceiving but determined to try; and the middle-aged parents, looking forward to seeing their last child graduate from college... when a night of unexpected passion lands them back where they started.

MAMMA MIA: Mamma Mia famously chronicles the story of a single Mom and her daughter on the eve of her wedding. On the surface, it’s a familiar, breezy comedy as the daughter searches for the identity of her father and love interests wax and wane; underneath, a more poignant story develops as the two generations of women explore the requirement of a male figure in their quest for fulfillment and a mother comes to terms with her daughter leaving for adulthood.

Characters:

Donna; Female, Mezzo-soprano, the mother of a 20 year old girl. Attractive and free-spirited. Former granola girl. A former lead singer in a group called “Donna and the Dynamos” who now owns and runs a hotel/casino on a Greek island. A strong feminist who also has a vulnerable side

Sophie, Female, Pop Soprano, 18-25: A very special young woman who is determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her mother. Has an adventurous spirit even though she pursues a conventional marriage. Must be able to move extremely well.

Tanya, Female, 35-45: A former singer in the “Dynamos.” Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, funny, and witty. Actress who sings. Must be able to move extremely well.

Rosie, Female, 35-45: Also a former singer in the “Dynamos” who now writes for and runs a feminist press. She’s confident, strong, and funny on the outside but shy underneath. Kooky and fun, good comic actress, a bit of a clown. Actress who sings. Must be able to move extremely well.

Lisa, Female, 18-25: Sophie’s friend who arrives to be a bridesmaid. Very energetic and kooky. Must be able to dance.

Ali, Female, 18-25: Sophie’s friend. Impulsive and fun. Should contrast to Lisa and Sophie. Must be able to dance.

Sam, Male, Baritone, 35-45: May be Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, successful architect. Actor who sings. Should be able to move well.

Harry, Male, High Baritone, Tenor, 35-45: May be Sophie’s father. British financier, wealthy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Must do a very convincing English accent. Also an actor who sings. Should be able to move well.

Bill, Male, 35-45: May be Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Good-natured, always ready for adventure. Funny, comedic actor. Should be able to move well.

Sky, Male, 24-30: Sophie’s fiance. Athletic, attractive – was a successful businessman. Left to help Donna with her taverna and marry Sophie.

Pepper, Male, Baritone/Tenor, 20-29: Sky’s friend. Helps run the hotel. Charming, loves women, always flirting. Must be able to dance. Acrobatic skills a plus.

Eddie: Male, Baritone/Tenor, 20-29: Another friend of Sky and hotel worker. Laid-back, easygoing. Must be able to dance.

Ensemble: Males & Females, 18+: Dynamic dancers with vocal range and comedic chops.
