Please bring picture and resume. Bring sheet music in the proper key, accompanist provided. Musical theatre song in the style of the show, no pop. No recorded music or a capella, please. Non-Equity please limit song to one minute.

OTHER

Performances to take place at the Kavli Theatre, Bank of America Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Thousand Oaks, CA. There is pay for all Non-Equity ages 18 and up. All ethnicities encouraged for all roles.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

BREAKDOWN

NOTE: All roles in MATILDA utilize British dialects (various class-based and geographical types) unless otherwise noted. Dialect at auditions a plus. Good enunciation required for all roles. All children’s roles limited to age 8 and up.

MATILDA (to play age 8-9): NO TALLER THAN 4’4”. A fiercely clever child, living in an abusive household she escapes into books and her imagination. Extremely bright, fearless and focused, and able to speak assertively. Strong moral compass with a smart, analytical mind. Strong singer and confident speaker. Must sing and move.

MISS TRUNCHBULL (male, 30s-40) – “A gigantic, holy terror, a fierce tyrannical monster.” Headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Preferably tall (6’ plus), physically imposing, must be physically fit and agile. Must sing (Hi Baritone, F#.)

MISS HONEY (female, mid 20s-mid 30s). “Slim and fragile that if she fell over she would smash into a thousand pieces like porcelin.

MR. WORMWOOD (male, mid 30s-mid 40s). “A mean crooked crook.” Scheming, dense, slick. Should have an ease of movement, or skills in clowning or pantomime. Must sing.

MRS. WORMWOOD (female, 30s). Shallow, vain, Loud of voice, dress and makeup. Must sing (Belt to top F/G) and dance or strong movement.

MRS. PHELPS (female 30s-50s). Local librarian. Warm and nurturing. Loves a good story. Possibly Caribbean or other exotic accent. Must sing as ensemble.

RUDOLPHO (male, 20s-early 30s). Mrs. Wormwood’s dance partner. Should be fit and athletic. Flare for character comedy, strong stamina for the dance. Must sing (Hi Baritone to A [in passing] and F [consistent]). Very strong dancer, Latin ballroom a plus. Might double as ensemble. NOTE: Those auditioning for RUDOLPHO may attend either a singing appointment or one of the Adult Dance Calls.

MICHAEL WORMWOOD (male, older teen-early 20s). Matilda’s older brother. A man of few words and even less thoughts. Might double as ensemble.

THE ESCAPOLOGIST (male, 30s). Charismatic, confident, warm and caring. Might double as DOCTOR or ENSEMBLE. Must sing (Hi lyric baritone).

THE ACROBAT (female, 20s-30s). Graceful, elegant. Doubles as ENSEMBLE. Must sing.

SERGEI (male, 30s-50s) – Russian Mafia Boss who is physicially intimidating. Russian accent. Must sing as ensemble. Movement a plus.

DOCTOR (male, 30s) – Confident, caring. Might double as ESCAPOLOGIST or ENSEMBLE. Must sing (Hi tenor to top A, plus ensemble vocals). Ensemble requires strong, athletic movers with a great sense of rhythm.

MALE and FEMALE ENSEMBLE (to play ages 20s-30s). To play various roles, including OLDER KIDS, SALSA DANCERS, HENCHMEN, MECHANIC, COOK, etc. Must sing. Some (not all) ensemble roles require strong, athletic movers with a great sense of rhythm. NOTE: Actors auditioning for ensemble can attend either the adult dance call or make a singing appointment.

Also seeking up to 4 TEENS (age 13-17) to play kids and older kids in the group scenes. Must sing well, and be strong, athletic movers with a great sense of rhythm.

THE KIDS (Ages 8-12): ERIC, NIGEL, BRUCE, TOMMY, AMANDA, LAVENDER, ALICE, HORTENSIA. No taller than 4’10”. Strong and varied personalities. All kids must sing very well, and be strong, athletic movers with a great sense of rhythm. NOTE: Children auditioning for these roles should attend either a singing appointment or the Children’s Movement Call, based on the child’s comfort and confidence levels. Please do NOT make multiple appointments.
