BREAKDOWN
Synopsis:
Little Gem tells the story of a year in the lives of three North Dublin women from three generations of the same family. Hilarious and poignant, Amber, Lorraine and Kay speak in a series of cleverly interwoven monologues revealing their lively personalities and the challenges they face. Like any nineteen-year-old, the sassy, impetuous Amber loves to party but is not so big on communication, especially with Mum. Lorraine worries about her daughter’s silence and has changed the locks on the door. A compulsive cleaner battling with anxiety, she seeks help from a therapist who suggests doing “one nice thing a week”. The Salsa lessons seem to be helping. Grandmother Kay, “on the wrong side of sixty, but not dead yet”, is concerned about her family and misses the intimacies which she can no longer share with her stroke-stricken husband. By facing their individual challenges with courage and humor, these three women find strength in one another and discover what family can really mean.
Seeking
Amber
Eighteen/nineteen has everyday boy trouble, with the restless indifference of late adolescence. Amber discovers, as she is about to dump her boyfriend, that she is pregnant. She is sassy and full of attitude but smart and intuitive and has a big heart.
Lorraine
Late thirties/early forties. Amber’s mother is a cleaning obsessive and has been fighting anxiety. Seven years previously she ditched her junkie-husband. Now working as a stressed-out shop assistant, she starts seeing a head-doctor who suggests she do one nice thing for herself each week. She goes out on a limb and signs up for Salsa classes which lead to an unexpected romance.
Kay
Early/mid sixties. The grandmother. A force of nature. Warm and humorous, eternally in love with her ailing husband, but finding life frustrating in more ways than one. A chance encounter in Lidl leads her in an unexpected direction.
All roles require authentic North Inner-City Dublin dialects.
