BREAKDOWN
NOTE: All actors must be first-rate farceurs with excellent verbal skills. Actors of all
ethnicities are encouraged to submit.
MAX: (20s) Must be a skilled musical theatre singer who can pass for an operatic
tenor. Hard-working assistant to the manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera, who,
due to a series of events, impersonates the greatest tenor of his day in the role of
Otello. Guileless, eager, cute and indefatigable.
MAGGIE: (20s) A classic 1930s ingénue, in love with Max, who harbors a fanatic crush
on the great tenor, Tito Merelli, and risks all for a passionate encounter with her idol.
SAUNDERS: (40s-50s) The harried manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera, whose
career depends on him getting the great tenor on the stage, on time. Dignified,
distinguished, and all business.
TITO MERELLI: (40s-50s) Must be a skilled musical theatre singer who can pass for an
operatic tenor, speak Italian, and possess an excellent Italian accent. The world
famous Italian opera star known to his fans as Il Stupendo, and known to his wife as a
womanizer with a very active libido.
MARIA MERELLI: (40s-50s) Must speak Italian and have an excellent Italian accent.
Beautiful, sexy, tart-tongued, loyal wife of the great opera star, Tino Merelli. Despite
his wandering eye, she always takes him back.
BELLHOP: (20s) Must be a solid musical theatre singer, who can fake opera and
speak Italian. Working at the hotel is his “day job,” until he is discovered as the great
opera singer he aspires to be…and he never misses an opportunity, however
inappropriate, to perform for the guests.
DIANA: (30s) Beautiful and sexy. Rising American soprano with the Cleveland Grand
Opera (does not sing in the play, however).
JULIA: (50s-60s) Extremely wealthy chairwoman of the Cleveland Opera Guild. A
classic provincial philanthropist who runs things with great style and a firm grip on
the proceedings.
