CONTRACT

NEAT NEAT Category 6 ; $473/week

SEEKING

Equity actor/singers for the following role:

Billie Holiday: the great jazz singer in the last year of her life. Age 44.

Author’s Note:

Although LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR & GRILL deals with one of the last appearances of Billie Holiday, the performances should be “up-beat” in every way. Joy and humor should be the prevalent emotions felt on stage. This is because singing was Billie’s salvation. Even when she sings a “sad song” her joy in the act of singing should transform the song into a celebration for the audience.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a 1-2 minute contemporary monologue and a 32-bar cut of either: “When a Woman Loves a Man,” “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” or a song in the style of Billie Holiday.

OTHER

Add'l author's note: The stories she tells should also be delivered as if they were the funniest things imaginable. The horror of her life will effect the audience much more if she seems almost oblivious to it herself.
