Directed by Rachel Chavkin

Rehearsals start – March 31, 2020

First Preview – May 19, 2020

Fleeing the Russian revolution and leaving behind a world of opulence and wealth, aristocrat Tamara de Lempicka and her beloved husband Tadeusz are forced to make a new life. In the rising tide of fascism, Tamara takes to painting to survive, and when she meets the free-spirited Rafaela, a prostitute on the fringes of Parisian society, she’s torn between the life she cherishes with her husband and the passion, ambition, and possibility awoken in her by her new muse. Inspired by the life of the artist who transformed herself from penniless refugee to star of the art world when the world itself teetered on chaos, Lempicka looks at the beauty and danger of one painter pursuing it all.

TAMARA DE LEMPICKA 30’s. Soprano. Belter. Art Deco painter. Scrappy, independent, and resilient, Tamara sells her jewels and her body in order to free her husband from a Russian prison. A closeted bisexual. As she gains popularity, her focus becomes set on money and fame, and she becomes self-destructive and inattentive to her daughter, husband, and lover. This role has been cast.

TADEUSZ LEMPICKI 30’s. Tenor. White Russian aristocrat. Tamara’s husband. Charming and deeply loyal to Tamara. He struggles with feeling emasculated as Tamara gains popularity and fame and becomes the primary breadwinner for their family. This role has been cast.

RAFAELA 30’s. Alto. Tamara’s muse and model, a prostitute. Streetwise with mesmerizing charisma. sensual and fearless. Self-assured and self-possessed. Unexpectedly falls in love with Tamara and wants to start a life with her. This role has been cast.

KIZETTE 10 years old. Tamara’s daughter. Polite and shy, Kizette just wants to please her mother, who is her biggest role model. Until that is no longer the case. This role has been cast.

MARINETTI 30’s. Baritone or Tenor. Pompous, self-righteous, xenophobic, and sexist. Marinetti is a leader in the Futurist movement. He believes in art for realism, and uses art to represent war and brutality and condemns “feminine” art like Lempicka’s. This role has been cast.

THE BARON 40’s. One of Tamara’s first collectors. Has a good eye. Charming and warm. Largely responsible for Tamara’s rise to fame as an artist. This role has been cast.

THE BARONESS 40’s-50’s. Alto. The Baron’s wife. Comes off as cold. Chic. Highly observant, curious, and ultimately wants the best for her husband. Commissions Tamara to paint her.

SUZY SOLIDOR 30’s. Mezzo. Big personality. Runs an underground club in Paris. Tough exterior but idealistic inside; envisions a world where people can be who they are without discrimination. This role has already been cast.

ENSEMBLE: BOLSHEVIKS, ASSORTED PARISIANS, ARTISTS, RICH PEOPLE, SAILORS, REPORTERS, etc.

MOTHER RUSSIA

by Lauren Yee

Directed by Tyne Rafaeli

Rehearsal and Performance Dates: TBD

It’s 1992 - a year since the fall of the Berlin Wall, six months since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This new comedy centers around the love triangle that unfolds between two Russian surveillance workers and a fallen pop star, and explores what happens when the life you know is turned upside down and you are faced with more choices now that have previously existed.

EUVGENY male. twenty-five. Russian. Surveillance worker for the Russian government. Son of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Practical, level headed, meticulous. Has never made a decision about anything in his life. His whole life has been decided for him. Longs for the freedom of a chosen life.

DMITRI male. twenty-five. Russian. Loud, boisterous and somewhat oblivious. Dreams of working for the KGB and has studied all things American in preparation for his life as a spy. A Russian meat-head with a big heart. Afraid of being alone.

KATYA female. mid-30s. Ukrainian. After two years living in exile in the US, she is now living in St. Petersburg teaching music to children. A free spirit who feels she’s run out of choices. Under surveillance by the Russian government.

MOTHER RUSSIA Male or Female (or neither or both). Of a wise age. Everything and everyone, and nothing at all. All-seeing and all-knowing but rarely heeded.
