BREAKDOWN

In reference to the character descriptions below – most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with she/her and he/him pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender nonconforming, genderqueer, transgender and nonbinary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We have also listed race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. In addition, we will list disability when specific to a character, but are otherwise seeking actors with disabilities as well as nondisabled actors for all roles. - Language borrowed from Emily Tarquin & Kevin Kantor of Actors Theatre of Louisville.

DO YOU FEEL ANGER?

Playwright: Mara Nelson-Greenberg

Director: Rebecca Bradshaw

ABOUT THE PLAY: When Sofia is hired as an empathy coach at a debt collection agency, she sees that she has her work cut out for her. These employees can barely identify what an emotion is, much less practice deep, radical compassion for others. As they painstakingly stumble towards enlightenment, muggings and outbursts keep progress stalled as this seemingly blithe workplace becomes increasingly unsettling. This absurdly funny and potent play reminds us that change is not always easy and may come with unexpected costs.

DATES:

First Rehearsal: 8/16/22
Tech begins: 9/2/22
First Preview: 9/6/22
Opening: 9/9/22
Closing: 9/25/22

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

SOFIA - late 20s. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: she/her. Empathy coach who is warm, assertive, and not judgmental. She takes things in stride and really believes empathy is the answer to most problems. She begins the play confident, but self-doubt creeps in, causing her to compromise her values to please the group. She represses unresolved anger towards her parents. Sofia acts as the comedic foil against the ensemble of ridiculous coworkers.

EVA - early 30s. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: she/her. Eva is nervous and accommodating, and she has become the master at laughing so as not to cry. A bit frenetic, a bit of a live wire. Constantly agreeing to undercut herself for the good of the group. She can be read as fragile, but she has a strong inner core—and we see more and more of it as the play goes on. Doubles as the voiceover for DONNA.

JON - late 40s. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: he/him. Charming middle management who wears the label of boss with ease. He can get away with saying offensive things because he says them quickly and with a really nice smile. He is good at acting like the nice guy until he isn’t getting what he wants—at that point he transforms into a bully on a dime. Doubles as the voiceover for “Man’s Voice”.

HOWIE - early 30s. White. Character’s pronouns: he/him. A ticking time bomb who has gotten very good at appearing unflappable. His anger is always simmering right beneath the surface. Volatile and explosive.

JORDAN - late 20s. Any race/ethnicity. Character’s pronouns: he/him. The sensitive artist who is a feminist until a woman rejects him and he lashes out. Presents as confident with a good sense of humor. He bought into the office culture years ago, but he is always faking his conviction just a little.

SOFIA’S MOTHER/JANIE - mid-50s. Any race/ethnicity. Sofia’s Mother has been earnestly trying to get ahold of Sofia after the news of her divorce from Sofia’s father. She has a way of maneuvering around talking about the real-life issues to keep the conversation pleasant but is feeling slighted by not hearing from her daughter. Janie is an absent co-worker who appears in the final scene of the play to speak truth to Sofia’s feelings of being gaslit and taken for granted. Janie has this all-knowing, mystical quality to her. She is ghost-like and a little odd. Empathetic, firm, the leader of the women’s bathroom.

EDITH CAN SHOOT THINGS AND HIT THEM

Playwright: A. Rey Pamatmat

Director: Tyler Struble

ABOUT THE PLAY: With no parents, little food, and nothing in the bank account, Edith, her brother Kenny, and a giant stuffed frog are doing just fine, thank you very much. Making the rules up as they go with their new friend Benji, this rag-tag team meets their match when Edith ends up shooting something for real and the formerly indifferent outside world barges in whether they want it to or not. Full of heart and filled with laughs, this coming-of-age story explores the gap between childhood and whatever comes next.

DATES:

First Rehearsal: 10/11/22
Tech begins: 10/28/22
First Preview: 11/1/22
Opening: 11/4/22
Closing: 11/20/22

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

EDITH - (18+ to play 12), Filipino-American. Character’s pronouns: she/her. Kenny’s sister. A defiant tomboy who writes her own rules. Will stop at nothing to make sure she and her brother are protected from outside harm. Raw in her honesty with a tendency to always push back against reason. If she could have it her way, she’d take her best friend, Fergie the stuffed frog, and fly far away from here. Deeply struggling from the loss and abandonment of her parents.

KENNY - (18+ to play 16), Filipino-American. Character’s pronouns: he/him. Edith’s brother. A levelheaded, responsible young man, recently out of the closet and under a lot of pressure. Attempting to balance the responsibility of taking care of his younger sister and navigating his first romantic experience with another boy. When he gets to act his age, he is playful, charismatic and, hey, he’s sixteen, he’s trying to have a little fun here. Must always be the bearer of reality in a world that wants anything but the truth.

BENJI - (18+ to play 16), any race/ethnicity. Character's pronouns: he/him. Kenny’s “more-than-a-friend” friend from school. Nerdish with a gentle heart. When he’s in the books, he’s in his element. Overly constricted by his overbearing mother and coddled home. The thought of breaking the rules makes him squeamish but he’s getting a little tired of being everyone’s punching bag. Working up the courage to come out.

AND I AND SILENCE

Playwright: Naomi Wallace

Director: Rebecca Bradshaw

ABOUT THE PLAY: Dee and Jamie meet behind bars where they form a perilous bond and forge a plan for survival as they serve time. Their days fill with hope as they practice their soon-to-be plans. But after their worlds shift to life after incarceration, they learn the outside world is even more dangerous to their friendship than the jail itself. Exploring the fierce dreams of youth and the brutal reality of adulthood in 1950’s segregated America, And I and Silence is a dark yet playful, poetic portrait of desire, daring and survival.

DATES:

First Rehearsal: 1/3/23
Tech begins: 1/27/23
First Preview: 1/31/23
Opening: 2/3/23
Closing: 2/19/23

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

JAMIE - Ages from 17 to 26. Black. Character’s pronouns: she/her. Working class. Very smart-practical and tough. Steely, but unflinchingly optimistic-can be playful at times. Likes words, rhyming, and songs. At first, she is suspicious and wary of Dee. Jamie has more awareness about the world around her than Dee and believes she can overcome any obstacle.

DEE - Ages from 16 to 25. White. Character’s pronouns: she/her. Working class. Smart. Tough, and fiercely loyal. Younger than Jamie but can be mature and tender. Although she tries to keep up with Jamie's unflinching optimism, Dee retreats into darkness as the play progresses. A willing student-earnest and eager to make friends with Jamie, even when she is punished for it. Delights in the role-play they establish and enthusiastic to follow Jamie’s example.

NO CHILD

Playwright: Nilaja Sun

Director: Pascale Florestal

ABOUT THE PLAY:

What do you get when you attempt to have a group of high school students in the Bronx put on the play Our Country’s Good? Some groans, class skipping, and one teacher’s determination to make the impossible possible. A tour-de-force solo performance that sees one actor transform themselves with rapid-fire precision into all 16 characters, No Child… is insightful, hilarious and a touching master class for anyone concerned about the state of our education system and how we might fix it.
