ALBERTA PEARL JOHNSON:
African-American Woman. Age range 35-50.
Outerbanks, South Carolinian woman and mother. Imprisoned in Texas for violent assault. Has not heard from her daughter some time. Courageous, determined, religious. She speaks her mind. Must be able to sing A Cappella traditional folk, gospel, and blues songs of the period. Looking for actress with expressive dramatic and comedic range, strength, vulnerability and charm.

SUSANNAH MULLALY:
White Woman, Age range: 35-45.New York Upper class, Ivy-league educated Ethno-musicologist. Career-driven and ambitious but has a sense of humor and the ability to connect with people. Has not been given credit for discoveries she has found. Must be able to sing A Cappella traditional folk songs of the period and play autoharp accompaniment. Looking for actress with expressive dramatic and comedic range and nuance

Male. A playwright and director. Intelligent, opinionated and quick to judge. A reformed ladies man, who is used to being in charge. Charismatic, physically bold and honest.

VANDA:
Female (mid-20s) An actress auditioning for Thomas. Mysterious – she isn’t what she seems. Smart and persuasive. Doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Manipulative, bold and seductive.
