BREAKDOWN
Note: The play occurs as a live radio show of the beloved story—It’s a Wonderful Life. Therefore, all of the acting is done primarily through the voice. The majority of the roles require the ability to create an array of characters through distinct vocal choices and dialects.
Freddie Filmore
(Potter, Uncle Billy, Ernie, and others) -- (Male, late 40s- late 50s, open ethnicity) -- The charming Freddie Filmore serves as the announcer and host of the WBFR Playhouse in the Air, who seamlessly takes us between the radio show and commercial breaks. He easily captures the audience’s attention and has a talent for pitching a product while still sounding sincere. Freddie plays the irascible businessman Potter, who would love nothing more than to destroy the Bailey Building and Loan. Duplicitous and ambitious, Potter puts his needs ahead of the community and is a fierce proponent of survival of the fittest. Freddie also plays George Bailey’s forgetful and fumbling Uncle Billy, Joseph---the superintendent of angels as well as several other denizens of Bedford Falls including bartenders, children, and the local taxi driver. This role requires group singing and facility with various character voices and dialects.
Jake Laurents
(George Bailey and young George) -- (Male, late 20s - mid 30s, open ethnicity) Leading man Jake Laurents plays George Bailey, including several scenes from George’s youth. Although he longs for adventure and escape to foreign cities, George Bailey is fiercely dedicated to his family, his community, and the success of his father’s business. Throughout the play George is pulled between his own desires and the needs of his community. He is tempted by financial success and ambition, but ultimately denies that ambition in favor of honor and selflessness. He is a passionate speaker about the ideas in which he believes and can get folks on his side. George is noble, self-effacing, funny, and endearing. When faced with financial and personal ruin, George doubts his choices and falls into deep despair. Only by recognizing the unique and important position he holds in other’s lives does he find the value in his own life. This role requires group singing.
Lana Sherwood
(Violet, Rose, Mrs. Hatch, Zuzu, and others) -- (Female, mid 20s - mid 30s, open ethnicity) A facile radio personality, Lana plays a wide variety of women in George’s life. Sultry and flirtatious Violet provides a temptation to the young George and when they are adults she relies on his generosity to make a new start. Violet is ambitious, but a bit lost. Lana also plays George’s wise and loving mother Rose; the ever-efficient secretary at the Building and Loan; and Mary’s overprotective and wheedling mother Mrs. Hatch. Lana must also make a strong impression as the rigid and precise state examiner, Sadie Vance, who tries to stand up to Mr. Potter. Among others, Lana also plays George’s endearing and kind daughter, Zuzu. This role requires group singing and facility with various character voices and dialects.
Sally Applewhite
(Mary Hatch and young Mary) -- (Female, mid 20s - late 20s, open ethnicity) Sally Applewhite, former beauty queen, plays the generous-hearted Mary Hatch, whose quiet intelligence, wry humor, and earnestness win George Bailey’s affections. Mary has loved George since she was a child, and although she dated the wealthy Sam Wainwright, she prefers a simpler life in a small town with her family. Like George, Mary has a deep sense of honor and a commitment to bettering her community, including welcoming new homeowners to the neighborhood. Mary stands her own against George when they argue and she is a caring and strong mother. This role requires group singing.
Harry “Jazzbo” Heywood
(Harry, Clarence Oddbody, Bert, Sam Wainwright, and others) - (Male, late 20s - mid 30s, open ethnicity) Harry Heywood plays a diverse assortment of characters, including Clarence Oddbody, the eager and somewhat bumbling angel who has been put in charge of George’s redemption. Clarence is endearing, funny, and simple, although quite intelligent. Clarence’s simplicity comes from a pure innocence and faith in the ultimate good that is possible in the world. Clarence must save George and shows surprising strength and clarity of purpose to help redeem George. Among others, Heywood also plays George’s charming and debonair brother, Harry, and George’s romantic rival, the wealthy and energetic Sam Wainwright, who has an unforgettable laugh. This role requires group singing and facility with various character voices and dialects.
Foley Artist
(Any gender/age, open ethnicity) Although a largely silent role, this actor is a key member of the radio station's personnel and will execute the live Foley soundscape of the Radio Play.
