BREAKDOWN

Hype Man, a break beat play is the story of an ambitious interracial hip-hop trio who confront their relationships to music, racism, and each other when the shooting of a young black man makes headlines. All three characters are verbal, funny, quick on their feet and capable of building each other up, tearing each other down and giving each other plenty of shit from moment to moment.

Actors Theatre is working on becoming an organization that is free from harassment and oppression and we seek to cast as expansively and diversely as possible.

In reference to the character descriptions below – we recognize that most characters are written on the binary and use he/him or she/her pronouns. We invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. As an ADA compliant theatre, we welcome performers of all abilities and will make all reasonable accommodations in order to cast performers, regardless of disability, in any role possible. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

PINNACLE: (White, he/him, early-mid 30s) The Rapper. Smart, charming, hard working, egotistical with the goods to back it up. Grew up poor with his best friend Verb and is running like hell to keep up with the success that’s just one step out of reach. Huge blind spots formed by his own struggle and need to claw his way out. Knows this is his moment. Rap abilities a must.

VERB: (African-American, he/him, early-mid 30s) The Hype Man. At a personal crossroads. The original party guy and screw-up genuinely trying to reform. Waking up to his place in the system and determined to make noise and change. Coming to the uncomfortable realization that his best friend might be part of the problem and swinging wildly at solutions. Rap abilities a must.

PEEP ONE: (Mixed-race, she/her, mid-20s) The Beat-maker. A wunderkind who knows this could be her moment. Sees what’s wrong with the world but doesn’t think she can change it, so there’s only the music and herself to take care of. Starts to think differently over the course of the play. Holds her own with the guys. Will require some DJ/beat-making training - will be provided during rehearsal process.

Actors Theatre is furthering our commitment to our Core Values in all aspects of our work. We invite all artists and collaborators to hold them with us.
