LORD GORING: Man, 34. English. The Earl of Caversham’s son. Thirty-four but always says he is younger. He is clever but would not like to be thought so. A flawless dandy. He would be annoyed if he were considered romantic. He plays with life and is on perfectly good terms with the world. He is fond of being misunderstood. It gives him an advantage. A philosopher.

SIR ROBERT CHILTERN: Man, 40s. English. Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Intensely admired by the few, and deeply respected by the many. The note of his manner is that of perfect distinction, with a slight touch of pride. One feels that he is conscious of the success he has made in life. A nervous temperament, with a tired look. Has a passion for power and wealth.

MISS MABEL CHILTERN: Woman, 27. English. Sir Robert Chiltern's sister. She has all the fragrance and freedom of a flower. She has the fascinating tyranny of youth, and the astonishing courage of innocence. Flirtatious and light-hearted.

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

ELIZABETH SAWYER: Woman, 40s-60s. Any ethnicity. An outcast. People believe she’s a witch and therefore shun her and treat her poorly. Skeptical of Scratch. Isn’t quick to let people in. Smart and quick wit. Elizabeth has hope that the world could be better if we just burn it all down and start over.

SCRATCH: Man, 25-35. Any ethnicity. The devil. Charming and a great conversationalist. Persistent. Artfully manipulative. Scratch is more adept at negotiating with Cuddy and Frank than with Elizabeth. He has chosen to embody the form of a young man because he believes “young men will generally succeed.”

SIR ARTHUR BANKS: Man, 50s-60s. Any ethnicity. A wealthy and powerful man looking for a suitable heir to continue his legacy. Commanding. Has taken a liking to Frank as a possible heir. He secretly worries about his son, Cuddy, and how to guide him. His softer, more vulnerable side emerges when he talks to the portrait of his late wife.

CUDDY BANKS: Man, 25-35. Any ethnicity. Sir Arthur’s son, painfully shy, a morris-dancer. He is secretly in love with Frank (and also in hate.) Tends to perform his masculinity in front of his father and Frank. Easily swayed by Scratch.
FRANK: Man, 25-35. Any ethnicity. A confident and successful young man, charming and ruthless. He’s secretly married to Winnifred but will leave her if it means inheriting Sir Arthur’s inheritance. His ambition knows no bounds.

WINNIFRED: Woman, 25-35. Any ethnicity. Resigned and pragmatic, secretly married to Frank. Became Sir Arthur’s servant to be in closer proximity to Frank. Must keep her composure when catering to Sir Arthur as Frank schmoozes with Sir Arthur. Frank, who she deeply loves, is also a ticket to a life outside of servitude. SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

*In SONGBIRD, the music is played by the actors onstage. Instrumentation is somewhat flexible and can partly be determined by casting. Instruments can include: electric guitar, acoustic guitar, tambourine, cello, mandolin, violin, piano.
*Actors of all ethnicities are encouraged to audition.

DEAN (vocals, must play guitar (acoustic and electric)): Man, early 20s. Emo-country, sensitive. Plays guitar. Dean's mother is a country music legend. He considers himself an artist and he wants his music to be heralded as authentic. He is deeply in love with Mia and would do anything for her.

TAMMY (vocals): Woman, 45-50. Country music icon and fills every room she’s in. Her career is in a downturn. She loves her roots and the people from home, but LA--where she's been a superstar-is her home now. And although she chose her career over raising her son, she is not going to admit that.

PAULINE (vocals, tambourine, other instruments could be, but not limited to guitar (acoustic and electric), mandolin, banjo, violin, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar): Woman, 45-50. Motherly, upbeat, sexually frustrated. Mother to Missy, wife of Samuel, her high school sweetheart. Played a big part in parenting Dean, she’s the only mother he knows. Although she loves her family, the affair she's having with Doc is the most exciting thing in her life right now. She used to sing with Tammy at the bar when they were younger, but she never pursued a career like Tammy.

RIP (vocals, suggested instrument is acoustic guitar, other instruments could be, but not limited to, mandolin, banjo, violin, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar): Man, mid 20’s. Bartender. Plays guitar. Rip is lovesick. He loves singing the blues, but actually has a healthy, positive outlook on life. He believes he could be happy with his bartending job and the love of Missy. He values family and community.

MISSY (vocals): Woman, 20’s. Bartender. Goth to the extreme. Daughter of Samuel and Pauline. Loves Dean, hates everything else. Missy drinks a lot but is functional. She’s a singer but doesn’t have the passion for it like Dean and Mia do.

BECK (suggested instrument is acoustic guitar, other instruments could be, but not limited to mandolin, banjo, violin, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar): Man, 30-37. Country music producer/writer. Trained at the Berklee School of Music. He is not from the South, which is always an issue in his business. Very successful, but also feels like a fraud. Beck is Tammy’s music producer and boyfriend. He becomes fascinated by Mia and her raw talent.

SAMUEL (vocals, suggested instruments are cello, mandolin, acoustic guitar, other instruments could be, but not limited banjo, violin, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar): Man, 50-60. Manager of the bar, married to Pauline and father to Missy. Very content with his life, working at the bar and playing music with family and friends. He admits that looking the other way or keeping his mouth shut can be the keys to keeping peace and happiness within his marriage.

MIA (vocals, suggested instrument is acoustic guitar, other instruments could be, but not limited to mandolin, banjo, violin, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar)): Woman, 18-20. Ambitious but naive. She is looking for a way out, hoping to be recognized as a talented singer. She comes from a sheltered household with a strict father. She thinks she loves Dean, but becomes infatuated with Beck and the professional doors he could open for her in LA.

SOREN (vocals, suggested instruments are piano, ukulele, other instruments could be, but not limited to mandolin, banjo, violin, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar)): Man, 55-65. Owner of the bar. More of a figurehead, really. He got his heart broken a long time ago, and to prevent it from happening again, he crawled into a bottle. Brother to Tammy. He raised his nephew Dean while his sister was pursuing her career.

DOC (vocals, suggested instrument is violin, other instruments could be, but not limited to guitar (acoustic and electric), mandolin, banjo, upright bass, bass guitar, cello, piano, pedal steel guitar): Man, 50-60. Barfly, having an affair with Pauline. He was once a successful physician, and now is retired, spending his days drinking at the bar and playing music.

RENEE SHAPIRO-EPPS: Woman of color, 40s. Renee is an editor for HGTV magazine. Confident, self-assured, and very knowledgeable about plants and gardening. Used to live on a permaculture commune where she grew her own food, but now finds herself unfulfilled by her successful career and suburban life. Tends to casually name-drop her one and only college lesbian relationship.

BETH WANN: Woman, 30s. A gentle, kind, and sincere woman who has an untapped wildness tucked deep inside her. Unfulfilled, vulnerable, and a little lost after her husband has recently left her. Beth is looking for connection with her neighbors. She gives over willingly to Diane.
