Breakdown

Magical things happen when Little Leaguer Joey Stoshack finds the most valuable baseball card in the world – the T-206 Honus Wagner. Set in contemporary Pittsburgh, Honus and Me is filled with baseball lore and time travel with a twist. It transports the legendary Honus Wagner to the present, and takes Joey – and the audience – to the thrilling 1909 World Series between Ty Cobb’s Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to be enchanted by this surprising play!

JOEY STOSHACK - (Male, 20’s to play 10 year old) -- Joey loves baseball and knows everything about it, but isn’t very good at playing the game. He collects baseball cards, and thinks that if his family didn’t have money problems, maybe his parents would get back together. Needs to be comfortable with a mitt and a ball

HONUS WAGNER (Male, late 20’s – 40’s) - the legendary Baseball player, nicknamed “The Flying Dutchman”. Honus loves telling stories. He is a modest, kind and funny man who cares little for money and a lot for the game of baseball. Needs to be comfortable with a mitt and a ball. (Since Honus Wagner is a real person, you can look him up to get a better sense of his physicality and personality).

MISS YOUNG/Fan (Female, over 50 ) – Joey and Mom’s elderly neighbor. The neighborhood kids are afraid of her because she’s “really old”! She hires Joey to clean her attic, and has some secrets of her own. A rough exterior with a big heart

DAD/Auctioneer/Fan (Male, 35 – 50)
DAD – divorced from Joey’s Mom, Dad has instilled a love of baseball in his son. He tries to do the right thing, but sometimes fails. Needs to be comfortable with a mitt and a ball.
Auctioneer – present day. Big voice, fast talking.
Fan – in 1909

BIRDIE/Various Baseball players (Male, 40 – 60)
BIRDIE –The owner of a baseball card store. An ex-wrestler, Birdie looks like he’s part jock, part biker, part bouncer. He’s behind on his rent and has a temper. A real crook, the play’s villain.
Baseball players – include Joey’s Little League teammate, Wagner’s teammate, opposing Little League team pitcher, Detroit Tigers pitcher

TY COBB/Chuck/Others (Male, late 20’s – 40’s)
TY COBB – Great hitter for the Detroit Tigers. Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner square off during the 7th game of the 1909 World Series. (Since Ty Cobb is a real person, you can look him up to get a better sense of his physicality and personality).
CHUCK – Birdie’s assistant/sidekick, tries to be tough like his boss; a menacing goofball.
Others – include Opposing pitcher, Little League catcher

COACH/Mr. Mendoza/Sportswriter/Others (Male, 30’s – 50’s)
COACH – Joey’s Little League Coach. Not the warmest or most encouraging of coaches. Tends to talk on his cell phone while Joey’s up at bat. His adage would be “It’s not whether you play or not, but how you win the game.”
MR. MENDOZA – The “landlord”. He owns the building where Birdie’s shop is. He’s given Birdie until the end of the week to pay his rent, or he’s out.
SPORTSWRITER – both present day and in 1909

* The role of MOM has already been cast.
