ARIEL – Chinese American, 28, 7 months pregnant with twins. Acting as a surrogate for Ben and Claire. Teaches 7th grade social studies. Endlessly patient, deeply kind, with an immense hidden rage that she fears may one day consume her.
The members of NEON LEON, an indie rock band in Portland:
TOMMY – Chinese American, 25, Ariel’s brother. Drums. Side job in the copy room at some engineering firm, where people in nice suits make him feel small. He fears he will never be taken seriously.
DOUG – Biracial (half-Black, half-White), 28, Ariel’s ex-boyfriend. Bass. The Peacekeeper. Side job working in IT at a non-profit downtown, where everyone leaves him alone, which is the way he prefers it. He fears commitment—you can’t lose what you don’t have.
BEN – White. 32, married to Claire. Guitar. Ambitious. Well-meaning. Desperately hides his wealth. He fears that no matter how hard he tries, history will paint him as the bad guy.
CLAIRE – White. 30, married to Ben. Vocal. Well-meaning. Lots of Anthropologie. Used to work as a waitress but quit once she married Ben, so they could “focus on the band.” Suffers from a congenital heart condition.
