BREAKDOWN
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play follows Elwood P. Dowd – a polite man with a very strange best friend. Elwood’s sister, Veta, is concerned her brother’s friend will interfere with her life as a socialite. And who can blame her! Elwood’s friend is a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch invisible rabbit named Harvey. To avoid future embarrassment, Veta attempts to have Elwood committed, but after her frantic recount of her brother’s condition she finds herself mistakenly committed instead. The truth quickly reveals itself, and the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. But Elwood and Harvey’s influence on more than one of the doctors leads Veta to realize that maybe Harvey isn’t so bad after all.
Elwood P. Dowd: Late 20’s-late 30’s. A charming eccentric whose best friend is Harvey, an invisible six-foot-tall rabbit. Elwood is well-mannered, friendly, and kind. Veta’s younger brother.
Dr. Chumley: 40s-50s. An esteemed psychiatrist and the head of Chumley’s Experimental Rest Home for the Mentally Askew. A difficult, exacting man who will go to any length to protect the reputation of his sanitarium and his own reputation as one of the most renowned psychiatrists in the world, but his interaction with Elwood and Harvey reveal an unexpected vulnerability.
Dr. Sanderson: Late 20’s-early 30’s. A young and highly qualified psychiatrist, handpicked by Chumley. His talent is only surpassed by his vanity. He is as infatuated with Nurse Kelly as she is with him, though he struggles not to let on.
Judge Gaffney: 50’s-60’s. An old family friend of the Dowd’s and the family’s lawyer. A little in love with Veta.
Wilson: 20’s. A brute of a man. A devoted orderly responsible for handling the patients who will not cooperate voluntarily.
E.J. Lofgren: Flexible. A cab driver.
Veta Simmons: Mid 30’s-early 40’s. Elwood’s sister, Veta has returned to the family home after the death of her mother and is intent on landing a suitable husband for her daughter Myrtle Mae. She is concerned about fitting into society and all the social proprieties that that involves. She loves her brother Elwood very much.
Myrtle Mae Simmons: Late teens. Veta’s daughter. Both Veta and Myrtle are about the business of finding Myrtle a man to marry--a mission that is made impossible with Elwood and Harvey constantly popping in. Myrtle is extremely self-centered.
Ethel Chauvenet: 50’s-60’s. An old friend of the family. She is a leader of the town’s social circle that Veta desperately wants Myrtle to break into.
Betty Chumley: 30’s. Dr. Chumley’s kind and talkative wife.
Nurse Kelly: 20’s. A young woman who has a love/hate relationship with Dr. Sanderson.
