LAST OF THE RED HOT LOVERS

By Neil Simon

1st Reh 5/27. Prev: 6/13. Runs: 6/14 - 6/29/13

BARNEY CASHMAN

(Male mid 40s) Barney is an unassuming middle aged, successful restaurateur searching for fresh perspective. Married to his high school sweetheart for 23 years, he sees the world changing around him and is wondering if it is time for him to join the newly minted “sexual revolution” and have an affair. Standing in his way is the fact that Barney is of a different era and the rules of the game are unknown to him. Eager to break out of his routine, he has finally mustered the courage to step out of his comfort zone and take a walk on the wild side. Actor should have a great facility for verbal and physical comedy.

ELAINE NAVAZIO

(Female 30s – early 40’s) Elaine is a woman in a dissatisfying marriage to a dangerous man. She is looking for distractions from her life. She follows her cravings, whether they are for seafood, a drink, a cigarette or a brief affair. Her encounter with Barney is not her first time at the rodeo and she has little patience for his inexperience. Possessing a sharp wit, Elaine suffers no fools and knows what she wants.

JEANETTE FISHER

(Female 30s – early 40’s) Probably the singularly most depressed woman on the face of the Western Hemisphere. She is a friend of Barney’s wife and living in a very unhappy marriage to one of Barney’s best friends. After having come onto Barney at a party, she is unable to take it to the next step and follow through with an affair. Like Barney, she feels left behind by the modern world and is desperately searching for any shred of decency to be found.

Stoic and raw, he is searching for understanding but too young to put it into words.

VERA JOSEPH

(Female, 70’s – 80’s to play 91 years old) The widowed grandmother of ‘Leo’, Vera is a dyed-in-the wool Leftist from back in the day and still has a tremendous amount of chutzpah.
