ADULT CAST

Older Anne – an accomplished writer, early to mid-fifties, lots of energy and spunk but a dreaminess to her character as well

Matthew Cuthbert – an old farmer late fifties to sixties

Shy, gentle, unassuming. A man of the earth, he says very little, but speaks volumes with silence

Marilla Cuthbert – Matthew’s sister, a prim farmwoman; Late fifties to sixties Opinionated, firm with a strong sense of right and wrong. She is strict but has an enormous heart.

Rachel Lynde – the Cuthbert’s busybody next door neighbor Possible double with Mrs. Harris Late fifties to sixties; Highly opinionated and xenophobic. She is both suspicious and tart in her assessment of Anne. She eventually becomes Anne’s biggest supporter.

Mrs. Harris – a wealthy Kingsport dowager (think Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey). Sixties to seventies; Sharp-tongued, suspicious and a constant complainer who still enjoys controlling the lives of her adult children. She is aware of the power her estate has over family. She is very jealous and insecure about what other Kingsport elite think of her.

Mrs. James Pringle –double as Avonlea Townie, Mrs Sloane and Mrs Tom Pringle. Late fifties to sixties; A Kingsport aristocrat. Gossipy and likes to stretch the truth

Mrs. Walter Pringle - double as Avonlea Townie, Mrs Harrison and as the Real Estate Agent. A Kingsport aristocrat. Gossipy and enjoys hearing scandal; Real Estate Agent – local, Scot-Irishwoman, typically small-town maritime personality – she falls under the spell of Anne’s story

Mr Phillips/ The Reader – the local small town school teacher/ The Reader will also be assigned reading all of the stage directions for the audience; Thirties; He has an unseemly crush on one of his students. He is harsh and insensitive to Anne when she arrives in his class, which is completely out of control.

Morgan Harris – a wealthy Kingsport businessman. Late thirties – Forties; Rakish, handsome and somewhat cunning. He has a terrible reputation. He falls for Anne’s ingenuousness, her spunk and her feministic manner. He has never met anyone like her. On the other hand he is dismissive and arrogant and seems to not care much about his 15 year-old daughter.

Younger Anne – plays from 14 – 18. An orphan with a wildly overactive imagination, a theatrical nature and a very tender heart. She can be dreamy one minute and explosive the next. She becomes a young woman in this story and learns about heartbreak on many levels. We see her leave childhood behind, strive to be something greater than she is and finally realize that her heart is really with her family, the community who has accepted her and the boy next door.

The following roles are intended to be cast from area students.

Pauline Harris – an aristocratic spinster; Thirties; She is completely under her mother’s thumb, insecure and afraid to express herself

Elvira Evans – a classic beauty; who is also a rough-around-the-edges theatrical actress. Thirties to forties; She is brazen with Morgan, consumed by her own career and self-importance, as well as on the look-out for material that she can develop as a play to star in. She also has the air of a dilettante.

Miss Stacey – The King’s County school superintendent. Thirties; She hands Anne her scholarship at commencement and then goes on to help Anne find a teaching position in Kingsport when the chips are down for the Cuthberts. She is confident, empathetic and a true optimist. She is a guardian for Anne when the going gets tough.

Katherine Brooke – the Headmistress of Kingsport Ladies College; Thirties; A lonely, sarcastic, power-hungry principal – who is unable to break free from the bonds of a professional career. She is what Anne could become. And jealous of Anne’s accomplishments as well as her free spirited nature.

Diana Barry – Anne’s best friend, beautiful and dark-haired. Goes from 14 -18. She has none of Anne’s brain power but all of Anne’s heart. She is a simple country girl who wants a normal life and marries her boy next door – much to Anne’s chagrin.

Gilbert Blythe – handsome, stubborn – the perfect boy-next-door; goes from 14 -18. He is madly in love with Anne from the first moment he meets her. He is as academic and determined as she is. He loves to tease and then is unable to understand why it is offensive. He has big dreams for he and Anne that fall apart. He decides to go his own way, always heart-broken that she could neversee in him what he sees in her.

Prissy Andrews – local school girl; could possibly double as Emmeline; Around 15; Madly in love with Mr Phillips the teacher

Fred Wright – Diana’s fiancé. 18. Stolid and unimaginative. A farmboy working at a posh hotel for the summer.

Emmeline Harris - Morgan Harris’ insecure daughter. She has thick glasses and is put down by her peers, but she has just enough spunk and anger in her to stand her own ground. She dreams of being an actress – or someone like Anne. She finds the courage to learn to speak her mind.

Jen Pringle - spoiled mischievous Kingsport school girl; 15; She has arrogance and deviousness in large doses; she immediately decides to destroy Anne for sport, but ends up eating humble pie.

Myra Pringle - spoiled mischievous Kingsport school girl; 15; She is Jen’s sidekick, just not as cunning

12- 14. Schoolgirls
Girl Student #1 – a gaggle of spoiled and aggressive schoolgirls, one of whom doubles as Christine Stuart, Gilbert’s fiancé; 15-18
Girl Student #2 - 15
Girl Student #3 - 15
