BREAKDOWN

From the creators of Comic-Con The Musical, GLASS CEILINGS is a new musical about women throughout history whose stories you don’t know, but you should. It takes place in the surreal afterlife of “Hergatory,” where the women tell the stories of their lives while watching events unfold on Earth, wondering if they’re about to witness a major glass ceiling breaking.

[GODDESS] Female, any age/ethnicity but needs gravitas. She is smart, sassy, edgy, and a boss who created the world in just one day. Equal parts ethereal being and Joan Jett. Talks to the audience. Ability to play bass a plus (or willingness to learn some chords). Mezzo Rock Belter, strong lower range starting at F# below middle C (briefly) and going to a strong high E.

[THE SENATOR] Female, Caucasian, over 50. Poised and qualified, The Senator has faced a constant uphill climb in her path toward the White House. Strong emotional actor who’s also great with comedy. Tap experience a plus. Also plays role of a Muse. Mezzo, Ab below middle C to high F.

[SYBIL LUDINGTON] Female, Caucasian, early 20s to play late teens. As a teenager, she performed Paul Revere’s ride, but twice as far. Eager. Soprano. Ab below middle C to high Eb

[CJ WALKER] Female, African American, over 30. An entrepreneur who created an empire from nothing and became a self-made millionaire. Classy. Proud. Mezzo/belter. F below middle C to high E, New Orleans Jazz/Gospel style.

[CHING SHIH] Female, Chinese, any age. Started life as a slave/prostitute but became queen of the seas and commander of her own pirate fleet. Strong comedy. Maybe a little raunchy (she is a pirate!) Tough. Dance experience a plus. Style ranges from Urban pop verse big belt on the chorus. Mezzo/belter, G below middle C to high D.

[ELIZABETH BLACKWELL] Female, Caucasian, over 30. First woman to go to medical school. Deeply religious and conflicted. Educated. Confident. Upper class British accent. Mezzo/belter. G below middle C to a high D belt, if possible hit a high F not belt.

[SALLY RIDE] Female, Caucasian, brunette, 20s-40s. Scientist and the first American woman in space. Big life outside of her accomplishments. Never wanted to live in the public eye. Strong emotional actor needed. Mezzo/Belter, G below middle C to high E belt.

[JACKIE MITCHELL] Female, Caucasian, early 20s to play teens. Played exhibition baseball game against the Yankees and struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Mezzo/Belter, Bb below middle C to high Eb. Has to have vocal dexterity.

[SACAGAWEA] Female, Native American, 20s-30s. Helped Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition as a guide, translator, and negotiator. Passionate. Strong emotional actor needed. Soprano, Low G to high D

[ANNE ROYALL] Female, Caucasian, any age. The first female reporter to interview a U.S. President. Had to fight her way in. Bold and opinionated, didn’t like that the President wouldn’t sit with a female reporter so caught him swimming naked and sat on his clothes until he relented. Strong comedy. Alto Belter, Low G to high E belt.

[JESS] Female, any ethnicity, 30s-40s. Single mom and chief of staff to the Senator. Capable. Invested. Strong comedy. Also plays multiple ensemble roles including a Muse. Soprano. F# below middle C to high Eb

[STEVE] Male, any ethnicity, 20-30. Well-meaning young member of the Senator’s campaign staff. Strong comedy. Also plays multiple male roles including Toussaint, Reporter, and Sports Announcer. Tenor, Bb high note.

[BABE RUTH/JOHN QUINCY ADAMS] Male, any ethnicity, prefer over 40. Plays multiple male roles including Babe Ruth, John Quincy Adams, William Clark, Priest, Doctor, News Anchor, Reporter. Will be changing costumes the most. Need an actor strong in comedy, drama, and accents. Baritone, high note middle C.
