Gateway Playhouse 2020 Season
EVITA
Director: Keith Andrews
Rehearsal: April 21- May 6

EVA: (Female, 20’s-early 30’s) She is a fierce, ambitious and power-seeking woman, who rises to become the spiritual leader of Argentina by the age of 26. A woman of few options, she uses her sexuality to build power. The actor playing this role must be a trained vocalist with strong vocal stamina and excellent control. A legit Mezzo with a clear, strong mix that can belt to a high G and sing to a low E
(below middle C). Must be a passionate and strong actor, dancing a plus.
CHE: (Male, 18-35) This character is sarcastic, impulsive, jealous, and manipulative. Che is a political activist and the narrator of the show, a radical who isn't reluctant to ask tough questions and demand answers. An actor/singer that must move very well with a high, rock tenor voice that can sing a low A to high B, falsetto to high F.
PERON: (Male, 30-50) An officer in the Argentinean army who rises to become the Argentine President, and the founder of Argentinian political movement 'Peronism'. He is dignified, charming, cunning, and authoritative. A strong actor and singer who can play character/leading man. Vocal bass/baritone to high F.
MISTRESS: (Female, actor 18+ to play a teenager) Fragile, vulnerable, innocent young girl who plays Juan Peron's teenage Mistress. She is dismissed out of Peron's life by his future wife, Eva. The Mistress ponders this rejection, as well as her future during her song, Another Suitcase in Another Hall. She will also appear in the ensemble. Must be able to move well and sing a low A to a high E; sweet mezzo soprano sound.
MAGALDI: (Male, to 30-40) A pompous tango singer with whom Eva has her first love affair. A charming loser - never quite made it, but pretends he has. Has the first number in the show, On This Night of a Thousand Stars. He will also appear in the ensemble. A Latin American personality type and feel that needs to be bigger than life, but real at the same time. Sings high tenor High G.

DIANA: Late 30s to early 40s - bipolar - delusional - manic - depressive. Still, attractive, appealing, quick witted. Vocal range G below middle C to high G - strong mix to a D
NATALIE: Must read 16 - Diana's daughter, bright and attractive, she craves her mothers affection and attention and gets none. Vocal range G below middle C to high G - strong mix to E flat.
DAN: Early to mid-40s - Diana's husband - good looking patient and kind, but exhausted by family circumstances. Vocal range B below written middle C to high A full voice and to high D flat falsetto
GABE: Diana's son, must read 18. Charming, fun, energetic, carefree...BTW he's a ghost, or actually part of Diana's delusion. Vocal range C (written middle C) to high A full voice and high D (above staff) falsetto.
HENRY: Must read 17. Natalie's boyfriend, romantic, a musician, solid, but lazy. A “stoner”. Vocal range low A below written middle C to high G full voice and high A falsetto.
DR. MADDER/DR. FINE: Played by the same actor. Age range 35-50. Dr. Fine is a psychopharmacologist, practical, maybe a bit cold. Dr. Madden Diana's psychiatrist, described in the script as a “rock star” in that way that doctors can be perceived as saviors, confident and unflappable. Vocal ranges low A below written middle C to high A flat full voice.

MATILDA THE MUSICAL

MATILDA: The title character of the story. She MUST be as SMALL as possible. Essential Enigmatic, serious, intense VERY STRONG acting ability, clear voice with perfect pitch and clarity. She carries the entire show.
MISS AGATHA TRUNCHBULL: The tyrannical headmistress at Matilda's school who despises children. Can be played by a male or female. STRONG comedy and vocal ability Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: A2
MISS HONEY: Matilda's kindhearted teacher. Soft spoken and kind. She befriends Matilda. She is tired of living in fear under Miss Trunchbull. Vocal range top: D5 Vocal range bottom: F3
MR. WORMWOOD: Matilda's uncaring father. A slimy, greedy used-car salesman. Strong comedic acting needed. Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: D3
MRS. WORMWOOD: Matilda's self-absorbed, negligent mother and an amateur ballroom dancer. Strong singer & dancer needed. Vocal range top: F5 Vocal range bottom: A3
MRS. PHELPS: The kind Librarian who takes a liking to Matilda. Strong actress.

A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER

MONTAGUE “MONTY” NAVARRO– 30s. Handsome and effortlessly charming, clever and charismatic, vulnerable and endearing, with a highly developed appreciation for life’s ironies. High baritone with a strong top; solid low A to high A.
MISS SHINGLE– 30s – 50s. a Cockney housekeeper/governess who has served a wealthy, titled family for 30 years. She informs Monty that he is indeed a D’Ysquith. Storytelling is paramount for her role. Seeking a character woman. Mezzo soprano, G to high A.
SIBELLA HALLWARD– late 20s – mid 30s. Sexy, flirtatious, narcissistic, willful, calculating, and irresistible. A social climber, yes, but also truly loves Monty, and in the end would do anything to protect him. Tremendous wit and high style. Strong mover. Character mezzo, low F# to high A, belting not required.
PHOEBE D’YSQUITH– Early 20s – early 30s. Beautiful, virtuous, forthright, romantic, comically earnest, with a backbone of steel. She is not your typical ingénue, though. Actress must have a sense of irony and humor, in addition to a youthful innocence behind her sophistication. Coloratura soprano up to a high sustained C# with an optional high Eb. Very flexible and agile, B below middle C on the bottom.
THE D’YSQUITH FAMILY– played by one actor. 30s – mid 50s. Must be an experienced, skilled, and transformational comedic actor who has a superb grasp on British farce. Physical comedy and stamina is a necessity. Does not necessarily need to be a phenomenal singer, but must be able to carry a musical comedy without an ounce of hesitation. Plays a full range of characters from the same family, ranging from an off-kilter priest to a closeted bee enthusiast to a lowly custodian (each of them intrinsic “English types”). The D’Ysquith family is as follows: Asquith D’Ysquith, Jr.– a dandy, Lord Adlabert D’Ysquith– Eighth Earl of Highhurst, Reverend Lord Ezekiel D’Ysquith– a clergyman, Lord Adlabert D’Ysquith, Sr.– an elderly banker, Henry D’Ysquith– a country squire, Major Lord Bartholomew D’Ysquith– a bodybuilder, Lady Hyacinth D’Ysquith– a benefactress, Lady Salome D’Ysquith Pumphrey– an actress, Chauncey D’Ysquith- a janitor
WOMAN #1- 30s – 50s. Plays TOUR GUIDE, as well as PUB OWNER’S WIFE, MRS. PEBWORTH, 3RD NEWSBOY. Seeking a character woman. Mezzo soprano, G to high A.
WOMAN #2- 30s – late 50s. Plays LADY EUGENIA, an unhappily married countess. Overbearing and mean spirited at times, but comically so. Must be highly adept at the biting quip and the withering glare. Also plays MISS HETHERINGTON, and 4TH NEWSBOY. Low F# to high A.
WOMAN #3- Mid 20s – mid 30s. Plays MISS BARLEY, an alluring artist model. Also plays SIBELLA’S MAID, HYACINTH COLLEAGUE, PHOEBE’S MAID, HILDA. G to high C.
MAN #1- 20s – mid 30s. Appealing and attractive. Plays TOM COPLEY (aka FARMER), as well as 2ND CLERK, HYACINTH COLLEAGUE, 2ND NEWSBOY, ACTOR, ANCESTRAL BUST, DR. PETTIBONE, and GUARD. High baritone with a strong top; solid low A to high A.
MAN #2- Early 30s – 50s. A versatile and appealing character man. Plays DETECTIVE PINCKEY, who has a featured number. Also plays 1ST CLERK, PUB OWNER, MR. CROSS, 1ST NEWSBOY, 1ST ACTOR, PHYSICIAN, and 2ND ANCESTRAL BUST. Bass, low C to high G#.
MAN #3- 30s – 50s. A character man. Plays THE MAGISTRATE, as well as MR. GOODSALL, ACTOR, and MR. GORBY. THE MAGISTRATE has a featured number with DETECTIVE PINCKEY. True tenor. B flat to high B flat.

NEWSIES

JACK KELLY: The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an orphaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective of his best friend, Crutchie, and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability – especially when it comes to bantering with a certain female reporter. Must have a great pop tenor voice and sense of physicality.
CRUTCHIE: A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papes. Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; when in a jam, Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy- sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Crutchie is the heart of the resistance. Though his movement will suggest his bum leg, Crutchie should still be included in the dance numbers.
DAVEY: Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others, Davey is the brains of the resistance.
LES: Davey’s cheeky younger brother, is inspired by the freedom of the newsies and loves their independent lifestyle. A precocious and natural newsie, Les is an intuitive salesboy and a pint-sized charmer. He should present as younger than the other newsies.
SPOT CONLON: The proud leader of the Brooklyn newsies, boasts an intimidating reputation and a short singing solo in “Brooklyn’s Here.”
KATHERINE PLUMBER : An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Quick, funny, and resourcesful, she boldy captures the voice of a new generation rising in her coverage of the newsies’ strike. While she generally has no time for cocky, streetwise young men, she makes an exception for Jack Kelly. Though she only has a brief dance solo in “King of New York,” Katherine should have a great contemporary pop voice with a high belt – diction is key.
DARCY: The upper-class kid of a publisher who sides with the newsies. Can double as a newsie.
BILL: The son of William Randolph Hearst who joins the newsies' cause. Can double as a newsie.
WIESEL: Or “Weasel,” runs the distribution window for the World and knows most of the newsies by name. Assisted by the intimidating Delancey brothers, who keep order by any means necessary, Wiesel is Pulitzer’s disgruntled paper- pusher.
OSCAR and MORRIS DELANCEY: Tough brothers who work at the distribution window for the World, take the side of the publishers in the strike and are known to use their fists to make a point.
JOSEPH PULTIZER: A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, Pulitzer doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack.
SEITZ: Editor, advises Pulitzer, but ultimately admires the kids’ newspaper.
BUNSEN: Pulitzer’s bookkeeper, comes up with the ideas to raise the newsies’ price per paper.
HANNAH: Pulitzer’s practical and insightful secretary.
SNYDER: The crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy and horrible orphanage, is concerned only with catching enough kids to keep his government checks coming.
MEDDA LARKIN: Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies in their fight for justice.
MR. JACOBI: Allows the newsies to congregate in his restaurant to plan their strike – when he doesn’t have any paying customers, that is.
MAYOR: The Mayor of New York City rebuffs Pulitzer’s attempts to shut down the newsies’ strike.
