Equity actors for roles in Franklin Performing Arts Company's 2023-24 Season (See breakdown).

Performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, as well as performers with disabilities, are encouraged to audition.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a short monologue OR a short song OR a one-minute monologue and 16 bars of a song. Auditions may not exceed 3 minutes. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music. Also, please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

SEEKING:

Ariel: A mermaid and King Triton's youngest daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hard-headed, naive, and emotional, but also kind hearted. Female-identifying. 16-24. Vocal range: Ab3-Gb5.

Prince Eric: A human monarch who has no interest in taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more. Male-identifying. 20 to 30. Vocal range: B2-G4.

Ursula: CAST (those auditioning will be considered for understudies/potential replacements if needed). The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. Supposedly spurned at childhood, she will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Malevolent, calculating, and deceptive. Vocal range: Eb3-C5.

Grimsby: Prince Eric's British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties, specifically marriage. Male-identifying. 40 to 60. Vocal range C3-C4.

Flounder: A fish and smitten with Ariel, his best friend. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water. 10-13. Treble voice.

Scuttle: A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit ignorant, despite his supposed expertise. Male-identifying. 25 to 40. Vocal range: C3-G4.

King Triton: King of the Sea and Ariel's father. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. The death of his wife has also given him an irrational fear of humans. Male-identifying. 35 to 45. Vocal range: Ab2-F4.

Sebastian: A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can't bring himself to stand in Ariel's way. Male identifying. 30 to 45. Vocal range: Bb2-C5.

Chef Louis: The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades, seafood in particular. Male-identifying. 30 to 50. Vocal range: Bb2-A4.

Flotsam: An eel and one of Ursula's lackeys. Oily and spineless, will say anything you want or need to hear. Any gender. 20 to 40. Vocal range: E3- C5.

BUYER AND CELLAR

Alex Moore: CAST (25-35, male-identifying). An out-of-work actor desperate for a job and a new adventure. Gay, quick-witted, funny, optimistically sarcastic (not bitchy). Must be warm, engaging, funny and disarming. Much of the role is spent speaking to the audience. Actor also plays ALL roles in the play, including Barbra Streisand. It's important to get the essence of each character across to the audience, rather than attempt a full-on impression. Must be fit, well trained vocally and have the stamina to perform non-stop for 90 minutes.

BRIGHT STAR

SEEKING:

Alice Murphy: CAST. plays both 16-17 and 36-37. Alice at age 36-37 is an editor of a southern literary magazine; intelligent, attractive, professional – but with an air of melancholy. Young Alice at age 16-17 is rebellious, high-spirited, adventurous – looking to break out of small-town life and experience the world. A very strong singer and comfortable in folk and bluegrass styles.

Jimmy Ray Dobbs: CAST. plays both 18-20 and 38-40. Jimmy Ray in his early 20s in flashbacks is Mayor Dobbs’ son and young Alice’s beau; handsome, boyishly charming, well-built and intelligent; from a family of wealth and power and is being groomed by his father for a similar future in the family business; an independent thinker who is not afraid to stand up to his father for what he believes in; he has a sense of personal responsibility and morality as well as a deep reserve of passion and emotion. The same actor will also play an adult Jimmy Ray at age 38-40.

Billy Cane: a young soldier returning home from WWII; an aspiring young writer; fresh, open, optimistic, charming, and a little naïve.

Mama Murphy: Alice’s mother. A caretaker to her family and her rural community. A warm, loving, sensible woman. Hardworking, with great inner strength and compassion.

Daddy Murphy: Alice’s father; an authoritative and a stern disciplinarian; devoutly religious, hard working, a poor but proud farmer.

Mayor Josiah Dobbs: the Mayor of Zebulon; a political and financial powerbroker – distinguished, an imposing and controlling presence; has a genuine interest in protecting his son’s future and his family name, but in doing so, is ultimately pushed to a point of extreme and irrevocable cruelty.

Daddy Cane: Billy’s father. A widower. Spry, good looking. Kindhearted, if a bit lonely.

Margo Crawford: a small-town bookstore owner; a childhood friend of Billy’s who now harbors romantic feelings towards him; a natural beauty with a keen intellect.

Daryl Ames: An assistant at a literary magazine. Funny, with a dry and officious sense of humor. Insecure, and perhaps a bit socially awkward, but endearing and innately likeable.

Lucy Grant: A junior editor at a literary magazine. An ambitious, professional young “modern” career woman of the 1940’s. Strong, forthright and provocative with a sharp sense of humor.

Max: a customer at Margo’s bookstore, at first, he has a crush on Margo, but later becomes Edna’s beau.

Florence: an employee at Margo’s bookstore and a childhood friend of both Billy and Margo. Edna: an employee at Margo’s bookstore.

FPAC presents a reimagined immersive production of Tarzan the Broadway musical. THE BLACK BOX will be transformed into a multi-stage rock concert centering the iconic Phil Collins music, while telling the classic story by blending Broadway and concert experience.

SEEKING:

Tarzan: CAST. A vulnerable, fearless young man raised by apes. Terk's best friend who falls in love with Jane. Our story's protagonist. Male-identifying. Vocal range: B2-Bb4.

Jane: An adventurous young English botanist. She falls in love with Tarzan. Female-identifying. Vocal range: F#3- F5.

Kala: A gentle mother. Kerchak's mate and Tarzan's protector. Vocal range: E3- Eb5. Kerchak: The gruff leader of the gorillas and Kala's mate. Vocal range: Ab2-Gb4. Terk: A sarcastic ape and Tarzan's best friend. Vocal range: Eb3- B4.

Young Tarzan: An innocent young boy. Loses his parents and is raised by the apes. Male-identifying treble voice. Age: 8 to 13.

Porter: A bumbling English professor of biology. Jane's father. Vocal range: B2-C4. Clayton: A brutish, greedy hunter and guide. Leads Jane and Porter's expedition.

Barbara Fordham (46 years old) Daughter of Beverly and Violet. Wife of Bill and mother of Jean. Lives in Boulder, Colorado. Bill has been having an affair with a student, and he and Barbara are currently separated.

Jean Fordham (14 years old) Daughter of Barbara and Bill. Smokes marijuana and cigarettes. Loves old films.

Ivy Weston (44 years old) Daughter of Beverly and Violet. Librarian at the University of Tulsa. Unmarried. Having a secret love affair with Little Charles who turns out to be her half-brother.

Karen Weston (40 years old) Daughter of Beverly and Violet. Lives in Miami, Florida. Engaged to Steve Heidebrecht.

Mattie Fay Aiken (57 years old) Sister of Violet. Wife of Charlie and mother of Little Charles.

Johnna Monevata (26 years old) A young Cheyenne woman hired by Beverly as a live-in housekeeper before he mysteriously disappears.

Bill Fordham (49 years old) Husband of Barbara and father of Jean. Physiology professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Bill has been having an affair with a student, and he and Barbara are currently separated.

Charlie Aiken (60 years old) Husband of Mattie Fay and father of Little Charles.

Little Charles Aiken (37 years old) Son of Mattie Fay and Charlie. Unmarried. Having a secret love affair with Ivy who turns out to be his half-sister.

Steve Heidebrecht (50 years old) Engaged to Karen. Businessman. Lives in Miami, Florida.

Sheriff Deon Gibeau (47 years old) Friend of the Weston family who reports the discovery of Beverly's drowned body to the family. Barbara's high school boyfriend.

Beverly Weston (69 years old) Violet's husband and father of Barbara, Ivy, and Karen. Alcoholic, famous poet and former writing professor at the University of Tulsa. His mysterious disappearance, which turns out to be suicide by drowning, serves as the inciting incident, bringing the family together for the weekend.
