Civil War sci-fi musical. Union soldier Julian Munro and the brilliant Ada Lovelace transcend time to invent an omnipotent, steam-powered brain. Blending American indie-folk music with dreams of

invention, FUTURITY explores a world where utopia seems within reach.

Seeking (both listed roles are available):

General / Head of Society of Scientists:

One actor plays both. General: Man, mid 40s – early 50s. Gruff, war-weary Union Army general in the Civil War. Gifted officer, wise leader. Well-studied in the art of battle. Sees war as a terrible but necessary – and perhaps even noble – human art. The young soldiers idolize and fear him. Head: The Society of Scientists is a stylized amalgam of pompous authority – part stuffy acadèmie, part elitist bureaucracy and part ancient, bloated board of trustees. Their Head is the blustery, unquestioned authority. Should ideally be a bass, but baritone would do as well. Actor's voice need not be trained, but must be soulful and very powerful. Playing any of the following instruments is a plus, but not required: banjo, trumpet, trombone, violin, guitar.

Lady Byron / Member of the Society of Scientists:

One actor plays both. Lady Byron: Early 50s. Ada Lovelace's mother. Measured, cold and severe in temperament, but Ada's fiercest ally. One senses that Ada is her only friend. Her ex-husband Lord

Byron's dissolution has compelled her to drive her genius daughter into the fields of math and science, and she has forbidden Ada any pursuit that smacks of poetry or uncontrolled creativity. See character description above for info re: Society of Scientists. Mezzo soprano or alto.

Theatre’s statement: “The American Repertory Theatre is committed to an inclusive casting policy of non-traditional casting and encourages all actors to audition regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or the presence of a disability.”

If unable to attend, send picture and resume to ATTN: Ari Barbanell, FUTURITY Line Producer, American Repertory Theatre, 64 Brattle St, Cambridge MA 02138. No calls or e-mails, please.

EPA/NYC: 1/3/12. See separate notice.
