BREAKDOWN

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PENGUINS & PROMISCUITY
East Coast Premiere of a wild comedy by James McLindon
DIRECTOR: Kevin Cochran
FIRST REHEARSAL: June 26
PERFORMANCE DATES: July 7 to 23

SYNOPSIS:
A madcap comedy about the dangers of penguin musk. Who is the real father of Ernest? The English professor who pretends he’s living in the Victorian Age? The Marine Biologist who’s discovered a powerfully potent penguin pheromone? Or the arrogant French Waiter who moonlights as a sex therapist?

For the audition, please prepare a short comedic monologue.

ACTIVELY SEEKING A DIVERSE CAST. PERFORMERS OF COLOR ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION.

BREAKDOWN:

Julia:
female, 30’s. Any ethnicity. A Harvard Professor of Linguistics who can’t help but take on the accent of the person she’s with (mainly Victorian-era British and standard American). A loving mother and wife who becomes a sex-starved nymphomaniac whenever she falls under the power of a special penguin pheromone. Must be able to play very proper Oscar Wilde style verbal comedy and then immediately shift to very physical, very sensual (though not dirty), sex farce.

Albert:
male, 30’s. Any ethnicity. A Harvard Professor of English Literature who lives in the period he’s researching – currently thinks he’s Victorian, complete with obsessions on paternity, duty, shotguns and dueling. Speaks with a high British accent for 90% of the play. Must have a good, arch sensibility and be able to play real melodrama without falling into caricature.

Roquefort:
male, 20’s to 40’s. Any ethnicity. An obnoxious French waiter always looking for sex (has a scam on the side where he ‘treats’ men for impotence while impregnating their wives). Constantly mangles the English language in a very strong, over the top French accent. Can go from bragging conqueror to simpering coward in 2 seconds flat.

King;
male, 30’s. Any ethnicity. A marine biologist so ugly (we’ll be using a prosthetic nose, wart, etc. so don’t worry!) and so ill at ease among people in general that he chose to study penguins in Antarctica to isolate himself. Best friends since college with Albert and madly (and guiltily) in love with Albert’s wife, Julia. Kind of a cross between an absent minded professor and a dorkishly awkward, horny teenager.

Fantasy Man:
male, 20’s to 30’s; Any ethnicity. The wife’s idealized vision of each man when she’s under the influence of the penguin pheromone. A classic stud -- handsome, virile, great physique (spends much of his time ripping his clothes off to ravish her). Plays the idealized vision of her husband, a french waiter, a marine biologist and three deliverymen. Must have very strong physical comedian skills.

SOUVENIR
A Fantasia on the Live of Florence Foster Jenkins
WRITTEN BY: Stephen Temperley
DIRECTOR: Kevin Cochran
FIRST REHEARSAL: July 17
PERFORMANCE DATES: July 28 to August 6

SYNOPSIS:
A funny and touching look at Florence Foster Jenkins, the New York Socialite who thought she could sing, but couldn’t – at all! Her recitals become a sensation in 1930’s New York. Her story is told to us by her accompanist. Her “career” culminates with a recital at Carnegie Hall (which sold out in 2 hours!). By the end of that concert, her understanding of music (and our understanding of her) have both changed profoundly.

For the audition, for Florence, please prepare a short, classical style song or aria (accompanist will be provided). Be prepared to sing it both really well and really badly!

For Cosme, prepare a short, 30’s style number and be prepared to accompany yourself on the piano.

ACTIVELY SEEKING A DIVERSE CAST. PERFORMERS OF COLOR ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION.

BREAKDOWN:

Florence Foster Jenkins:
Female, 50’s-60’s; Any ethnicity. A wealthy society woman who believes herself to be a great soprano. Her belief in her talent and her dedication to music is absolute (though she’s unable to sing two notes in tune). Must have a legit soprano for a final rendition of Ave Maria. And needs impeccable deadpan comic timing for all the other musical pieces she butchers.

Cosme McMoon:
Male, 40’s-50’s; Any ethnicity. The former accompanist to Florence Foster Jenkins who is now the resident pianist at an elegant supper club in Greenwich Village. Known as much for his abrasive asides as his music. Plays ages 24 to 50’s. His attitude toward Florence slowly evolves from horror to incredulity to fascination to admiration and eventually to a grudging love. Must play the piano as he accompanies both himself and Florence throughout the show.

=======

THE TAFFETAS
Conceived by Rick Lewis; Add’t material by Arthur Whitelaw;
Musical & Vocal Arrangements by Rick Lewis
DIRECTOR: Amy Griffin
MUSICAL DIRECTOR: Joseph Schermann
FIRST REHEARSAL: July 31
PERFORMANCE DATES: August 11 – August 27 (with a potential extension through Sept 3)

SYNOPSIS:
This four woman girl group sings hit after hit of the 1950’s as they desperately try to get chosen for The Ed Sullivan Show.

ACTIVELY SEEKING A DIVERSE CAST. WOMEN OF COLOR ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION.

Seeking 4 strong female actors with terrific voices, stage presence, great comic sense, and strong harmony skills.

Please prepare a brief 50s pop song that shows personality, or a song with a similar feel to it. You are welcome to sing from the show if you like.

KAYE:
Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. The oldest sister and leader of the singing group. A decision-maker; in charge. A bit of a lovable control freak. Busts out with an over-the-top Elvis number at the end. Sings: I’m Sorry, Old Cape Cod, Where The Boys Are, Oh Darlin’, and more.

PEGGY:
Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. Eager to become a wife and homemaker. Sweetly nerdy and anxious to please. Her hobbies are practicing her mother’s recipes and doing Paint-By-Numbers. Panics when anything goes awry in the show. Sings: My Little Grass Shack, Lollipop, Dedicated to the One I Love, and more.

CHERYL:
Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. Unwitting sex kitten, appealingly innocent and feminine. She was definitely the Prom Queen in high school. She has man trouble and is highly dramatic about it. She goes off-script in the show when she gets carried away. Sings: I Cried, Allegheny Moon, Johnny Angel, and more.

DONNA:
Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. The youngest sister. She is excited about everything. Perky, mischievous, a bit of an airhead. She sometimes delights in driving Kaye crazy. Sings: Ricochet, Tennessee Waltz, Mr. Lee, and more.
