SEEKING

MANINGNING TUGADE (Pronounced To-ga-dee) – female, Filipino-American, mid to late-20’s, expert ball room dancer Maningning is conciliatory, diplomatic, strategic, astute. She is capable and deft, committed to harmony and conflict resolution; looks for necessary ways and means to balance her own desire for personal freedom with her family obligations. Highly talented and versatile, she finds release only from her dancing.

GEORGE TUGADE
Father to MANINGNING, Filipino- American, 43, professional ball room dancer/teacher GEORGE has given up his own dreams to run a business that has been able to keep his family going; generous and self-sacrificing towards his child, traditional in his duty towards his parents, conservative, practical, controlling

WINDY
Female, Filipino, 20, ball room dancing student. A spoiled upper-class young girl used to getting her own way but is determined and committed to resolving obstacles put in front of her; she is attached to her grandmother and her grandmother’s wishes and wants to maintain a harmonious relationship but only up to a point; she’s capricious in her youthfulness, effervescent and lively

MARIETTA
Female, Filipino, early to mid-30’s, amateur ball room dancer. Sophisticated, mature and svelte; also has a vested interest in maintaining a harmonious relationship with her family but has now gathered enough strength and courage to go against their values as they relate to gay politics; like Windy, she can accept family values to a point, but beyond that, she would fight for her rights; however, she is artful, using dance as an indirect way of getting what she wants.

DONA ISABEL LOZADA VILLAFRANCA
Female, Filipino, 70, expert ball room dancer. She is getting old and is reassessing the life choices she’s made; she has regrets; she tries hard to resolve these feelings but knows she might be too late; she has occupied a dominant and central role in her family’s life; she is matriarchal, controlling, and pragmatic to a fault, shrewd and savvy and worldly-wise; however, these qualities are a function of her deep and intense love for the clan, not just for the immediate family members. She is imperious but not arrogant.
