PREPARATION

Please prepare a song in the style of the show for The Fantasticks or Cabaret. Please prepare a short monologue for Summer Session with the Bones Brigade.

BREAKDOWN

THE FANTASTICKS (A Love Story Reimagined)

El Gallo: Male (30s-40s any ethnicity) The narrator. Sings well.

Lewis: Male (20s – 30s any ethnicity) A young man living with his mother on one side of a wall. Sings well.

Matt: Male (20s – 30s any ethnicity) A young man living with his mother on the other side of a wall. Sings well.

Mildred: Female (50s – 60s any ethnicity) Mother of Matt, devising a plan to connect Matt and Lewis via a fake feud. Sings well, has comedic qualities.

Bessie: Female (50s – 60s any ethnicity) A button-maker and the mother of Lewis devising a plan to connect Lewis and Matt via a fake feud. Sings well, comedic qualities.

Henry: (50s and up, any ethnicity) An ancient actor who specializes in reciting passages from Shakespeare’s plays, Henry is hired by the two mothers to stage an abduction in order to end the fake feud.

Mortimer: (50s and up, any ethnicity) An actor who specializes in dying, Mortimer works with Henry.

SUMMER SESSION WITH THE BONES BRIGADE

SHANE: 18 to 21 years old; any ethnicity; male. Troubled youth who is part of a group of high-school skateboarders. He is conflicted with his best friend’s new relationship with a young girl and holds built up resentment. Shows emotional range required. LEAD

HEATH: 18 to 21 years old; any ethnicity; male. Troubled youth who is part of a group of high-school skateboarders. Best friends with Shane and starts a new relationship with a young lady. Shows emotional range. LEAD

DK: 18 to 21 years old; any ethnicity; male. Troubled youth who is part of a group of high-school skateboarders. Shows emotional range. SUPPORTING

LEE: 18 to 21 years old; any ethnicity; male. Troubled youth who is part of a group of high-school skateboarders. Shows emotional range. SUPPORTING

LORALAI: 18 to 21 years old; any ethnicity; female. Troubled youth who has a relationship with Shane and then with Heath causing a rift in the group of friends. SUPPORTING

SID: 18 to 21 years old; any ethnicity; female. Troubled youth who admires Loralai and becomes friends with the group. SUPPORTING

CABARET

EMCEE: (20+ any ethnicity, male) An androgynous, hyper-sexual entertainer who embodies Berlin in the 1930s. Excellent singing skills, dancing a plus.

SALLY BOWLES: (20s – 30s any ethnicity, female) English, a charming, slightly manic nightclub singer with a faint aura of desperation. Sings and dances well.

CLIFF: (20s-30s all ethnicities, male): from Harrisburg, PA, a handsome writer, briefly infatuated with the decadent glamour of pre-war Germany. At his core is a naive and tender romantic.

ERNST: (20s-30s any ethnicity, male): German, an amiable, fairly nondescript looking friend of Sally and Cliff. In many ways the last person one would expect to join the Nazi party making his transformation all the more chilling. Sings.

FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER: (50s+ any ethnicity, female): German, the owner of Sally and Cliff'’s boarding house. A genteel, impoverished, middle-class woman, frightened by the Nazis, and ultimately too weak to stand against them. There is a hint of fading European glamour to her. Sings very well.

HERR SCHULTZ (50+ any ethnicity, male): German-Jewish, a warm, wise and funny middle-class man. He is helpless in the face of the quickly crumbling Germany around him. Sings.
