BREAKDOWN

Cain Park 2024 Summer Theater Season

25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

SEEKING:

Chip Tolentino (18-30s, Tenor) An athletic, social, boy scout and champion of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment (role doubles as Jesus)

Logainne Schwartzandgrubeniere (18-30s, Alto/Belter) is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures. She is driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win to make her two fathers proud. She is somewhat of a neat freak, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year.

Leaf Coneybear (18-30s, Tenor) The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition on a lark and finds everything about the bee incredibly amusing. He is home-schooled and comes from a large family of former hippies. He has severe Attention Deficit Disorder and spells words correctly while in a trance (role doubles as Carl Dad)

William Barfee (18-30s, Baritone; strong movement ability a plus) A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts and is back for vindication. His famous Magic Foot method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy, bullying personality. He develops a crush on Olive.

Marcy Park (18-30s, Soprano/Belter; strong movement ability a plus; those who identify as AAPI are encouraged to audition) The ultimate over-achiever, Marcy has never been given another option. She comes from a family where excellence is expected and so simply produced. A parochial school student, she assumes God, too, expects perfection. She sees herself as a mass of problems but she keeps them to herself. Having moved often because of her parents' work, she knows she can beat the local competition. Her many talents include piano, dance, martial arts, baton twirling, and/or whatever special gifts the actor may possess.

Olive Ostrovsky (18-30s, Soprano/High Mix-Belter) A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come sometime during the bee. Having found comfort in its words and vastness, Olive made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her to make it to the competition. She starts enormously shy, and shyly blossoms.

Rona Lisa Peretti (30s-60s, Soprano, with a very strong mix) The number-one realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion herself, and the returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch and his feelings for her. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward (role doubles as Olive’s Mom)

Douglas Panch (30s-70s, Baritone; excellent improvisational skills) The Vice Principal. Frustrated with his life, he finds the drive of the young spellers alien to him. After five years' absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an incident at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in a better place now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. He is infatuated with Rona Lisa Peretti, but she does not return his affections.

Mitch Mahoney (20s-60s, Baritenor who can riff well) The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort, but does find himself wishing he could find a way to make the kids feel better (role doubles as Dan Dad and Olive’s Dad)

BIG FISH

Note: Cain Park is producing the Small Cast Edition with an ensemble of 12 actors who are all heavily featured.

SEEKING:

Edward Bloom (20s-40s, Baritenor, strong movement ability a plus; this role almost never leaves the stage, and the role transforms from adolescence to 60+) A loving husband and father who leads a complex imaginary life with many fantasy friends; a huge heart, a great sense of humor and a vivid imagination.

Will Bloom (20s, Tenor) Edward’s adult son who is recently married and expecting his first child; a realist and a pragmatist; and the polar opposite of Edward. His journey of reconciliation with his father is the story of the musical.

Sandra Bloom (20s-40s, Soprano with belt/mix; this role transforms from adolescence to 60+) Edward’s loving wife who completely understands her husband and who seeks and believes in the possibility of reconciliation between her husband and son.

Young Will (Child age 8-12) Intrigued by his father’s stories, but already starts to doubt their truth.

Josephine Bloom (20s, Mix/belt) Will’s wife, a lovely young woman who provides balance for Will’s pragmatism. With Sandra, she supports and helps guide Will’s journey toward reconciliation with his father.

Karl the Giant (20s-60s, Bass, over 6’5” tall preferred; this role requires stilt walking and comic timing) Through Edward’s friendship, he grows from being a ‘beastly’ outcast to a highly successful businessman.

Amos Calloway/Dr. Bennett/Others (30s-70s, Baritone) (Calloway) A werewolf, another of Edward’s fantasy friends. Masquerading as a ringmaster of a broken-down circus, he begins as Edward’s tormentor but then, through Edward’s acceptance, he accepts himself and becomes highly successful; (Bennett) Edward’s physician in his later years.

Don Price/Others (20s-40s, Baritone, good comic timing a plus) Edward’s childhood frenemy, an early buddy, bully and rival for Sandra’s hand.

The Witch/Others (20s-50s, High belt, strong movement ability a plus) The earliest and most fantastic of Edward’s “imaginary” acquaintances who shows him how he’ll die.

Jenny Hill/Others (20s-40s, Mix/belt, strong movement ability a plus) The other woman, one of Edward’s early childhood friends who he forgets but then who later becomes the recipient of his kindness.

Girl in the Water/Others (20s-40s, Mix/belt, strong movement ability a plus) A beautiful vision from Edward’s fantasy friends, his first kiss.

Zacky Price/Mayor/Others (20s-40s, Baritenor, good comic timing a plus) Nerdy brother and shadow of Don Price.
