BREAKDOWN

Connecticut Repertory Theatre 2019-20 Season

THE CHERRY ORCHARD
by Anton Chekhov
1st Rehearsal 8.26.19, Opening 10.4.19, Closing 10.13.19.

Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya
is a very attractive woman of 47. She has a romantic soul and is kind and charming. Frequently emotional and impulsive, Ranevskaya is highly vulnerable. Raised as she was, Ranevskaya is used to having the finer things in life.

Leonid Andreyevich Gayev
is 51. He has an aristocratic demeanor and is highly conscious of social standings — he holds close to old-fashioned principles. Like his sister Lyuba, Gayev loves his family very much. Gayev is something of an eccentric and often indulges himself in verbal flights of fancy.

Henslowe
(Male, late 35-40s, any ethnicity) Owner of the Rose Theatre. He is a wily producer who owes money to Fennyman. He needs Will’s next unwritten play to be a hit so that he can pay off his debts. Ability to play musical instruments and/or sing is a plus.

Tilney/DeLesseps
(Male, 40s- 55, any ethnicity) Tilney is the Lord Chamberlain and a prototype for Shakespeare’s character Malvolio. He is vain and pompous. DeLesseps is Violas father. He is a cold hearted businessman who arranges his daughter’s marriage to Wessex. Ability to play musical instruments and/or sing is a plus.

THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME
by Simon Stephens
1st Rehearsal 1.20.20, Opening 2.27.20, Closing 3.8.20.

Ed Boone/Others:
Male 35-55, Christopher's father; estranged from his wife, Judy, and struggling as a single parent to raise his son. A working class man - proud, gruff and brusque. He loves his son deeply. There is a lot on Ed's shoulders when he first enters the play– in pain and near a breaking point, though he does not openly express it. He has trouble communicating with Christopher, who often frustrates him. Ed is naturally practical and much more patient in dealing with Christopher than Judy, but a difficult situation can make him lose it, sometimes violently. A plumber and heating engineer by trade, naturally good with his hands; English accent appropriate to working middle class. Any ethnicity

Judy Boone/Others:
Female 35-55, Christopher's mother; estranged from her husband, Ed, after having an affair with her neighbor Roger. She works as a secretary and is a working class woman with a tough exterior who has no support system to raise her son. She blames herself for her inability to cope with him effectively. She has had a hard life and had to fight for things, which she is ready to do. She is feisty and doesn't take anything lying down. Loving, yet impatient, she has felt very alone in her situation with Christopher and it frustrates her to a point of absolute desperation. She wishes she knew how to truly reach and care for Christopher. Independent, lonely and proud, she doesn't easily ask for help and has never had the proper social resources to help her. English accent appropriate to working middle class. Any ethnicity

Mrs. Alexander/Others
Female 55-75, One of Christopher's neighbors who has probably lived in Swindon her entire life. May be middle class or middle working class. She is a lonely older woman without a lot of means. She is kind, and so hungry for a connection with Christopher that she tries to help him and ultimately reveals information to him about his mother that he did not know. English accents appropriate to class. Actor plays multiple characters, ranging in age from 50-80. Any ethnicity

African-American, Female 20-35, Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon act as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these girls are the only ones who have a grip on reality.

Mr. Mushnik
Male 55-65. The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour's nosy boss. He is profit-driven, greedy, and manipulative.
