SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

THE NEIGHBOR (male, 30s or 40s)- hero and narrator of our story, he is a lonely shut-in who has resorted to eavesdropping as his main source of entertainment. A songwriter with writer’s block, he dearly misses his former girlfriend Scarlet and finds painful similarities in his new neighbor, The Wife. He has a strong, heroic man inside of him, when he’s not preoccupied with his depression and his past. *must be able to play piano. Baritone (approx. A2 – E4). PRINCIPAL ROLE.

SCARLET (female, 20s through early 40s)- the bombshell star singer of a night club. She is the former girlfriend of The Neighbor. Scarlet struggles with depression and pill addiction, but is not without a tender side. Alto with a strong belt (approx. F3 – F5). PRINCIPAL ROLE.

THE WIFE (female, early 20s)- a gorgeous ballroom dancer from Ohio who has moved with her husband to LA without any money and with secrets aplenty. She too struggles with pill addiction and must juggle her relationships with her husband and her lover. She seems to be tangled up with all the wrong people. Mezzo-soprano (approx. G3 – F5). PRINCIPAL ROLE.

THE KID/ BACKUP SINGER & DANCER (female, should be able to read as a teenager)- a smart, young roustabout with a knack for sharing news and a taste for whiskey. She can finagle with the best of them and is The Neighbor’s only friend. Alto with excellent harmony skills. PRINCIPAL ROLE.

THE HUSBAND/ THE LOVER (male, early 20s)- The Husband is the source of the Wife’s money problems. An attractive man, he is an actor and former bartender who frequently stole from the night club he was working at. Now he works construction. The Lover has a deeper voice than the Husband and is full of cheesy come-ons and big dreams for him and the Wife. Bari-Tenor (approx. C3 – F4). PRINCIPAL ROLE.

THE BOSS/ BACKUP SINGER & DANCER (male, 30s or 40s)- A no-nonsense mob boss, tough as nails and as dirty as they come. Tenor with excellent harmony skills. PRINCIPAL ROLE.

THE GOON/ BACKUP SINGER & DANCER (male, 20s or 30s)- Brawns over brains and doesn’t take kindly to being crossed. Incredibly violent, yet a virtuosic singer. Bari-Tenor with excellent harmony skills. PRINCIPAL ROLE.

*Score is more in a pop/rock/jazz idiom, no ‘legit’ singing.
