BREAKDOWN

A romantic comedy about loss, love, change and redemption. Matilde, a former student of humor, has left Brazil after the death of her parents to work as a housekeeper for Lane, a career-minded doctor, and her husband, Charles. When Matilde suddenly stops cleaning, Lane is beside herself—until her sister, Virginia, secretly begins cleaning on Matilde’s behalf. Meanwhile, Charles has fallen head over heels for the passionate, charismatic Ana, his patient who is dying from cancer. Ruhl's enchanting play reminds us that there is humor and beauty to be found in life's most unlikely messes.

We welcome actors of all abilities, ethnicities and gender identities to submit.

Portuguese is her first language. We are ideally looking for a bilingual actor for this role. Interested in seeing a wide range of looks.

LANE:
Female-identifying, early 50s, Any ethnicity. A successful, well-liked doctor. Confident, poised, smart. Until the beginning of this play, everything has gone right for her. Interested in seeing a wide range of bodies and looks.

She looks nothing like her sister. Strongly seeking actors of color for this role and are interested in seeing a wide range of bodies and looks.

A MAN / CHARLES:
Male-identifying, 50s, Any ethnicity. Lane’s husband. A compassionate surgeon who is childlike underneath his white coat. Travels to Alaska to cut down a tree in order to save the life of the woman he falls in love with. In the first act, he plays Matilde’s father.
