BREAKDOWN

CHASING RAINBOWS: THE ROAD TO OZ is the story of how Frances Gumm became Judy Garland and won the role of Dorothy in the beloved movie musical The Wizard of Oz.

SEEKING:

JUDY GARLAND (Frances Gumm) (Mid-teens to early 20’s)
Seeking a brilliant young actress and singer to play Judy Garland at ages 13-16. Physically, Judy is going through an awkward stage but what she lacks in glamour she more than makes up for in effervescence. She has the energy of a pep squad and a never-say-die commitment to succeed, combined with a ready wit and a wicked sense of the absurd. More than anything, Judy just wants to be loved and accepted for who she is. Her vulnerability is as fragile as her self-esteem. She believes if she can just become a movie star, she can heal her broken family and quell her intense insecurities. Dance skills, including tap are a huge plus.
Vocal Type: Mezzo/Traditional Belter

FRANK GUMM (30’s to 40’s)
Judy’s father. Like his daughter, Frank Gumm’s charismatic, audience-pleasing showmanship does not conceal the delicate poetry of his soul. Watching him perform, one can see the origins of the adult Judy Garland. Seeking a strong legit singer/actor with movement ability.
Vocal Type: Legit Bari-tenor or tenor

ETHEL GUMM (30’s to 40’s)
Judy’s mother. A plain woman who compensates with a relentless, aggressive drive to succeed. Ethel’s need to be loved as a woman overshadows the tough love she practices with her children. Seeking a strong comedic actress with a beautiful soprano with mix to E. Piano ability a plus.
Vocal Type: Mezzo/Mix

ROGER EDENS (30’s)
A Hollywood musician and a figure at MGM. Roger has an open, easy manner in keeping with his Texas roots and the comfort in his own skin, a quality he longs to impart to young Judy. May also play the role of George Jessel. Seeking a strong singer/actor. Piano ability a plus.
Vocal Type: Bari-tenor

MICKEY ROONEY (Joe Yule) (Mid-teens to early 20’s)
Seeking an excellent performer to play Mickey Rooney at ages 14-17. He’s a pint-sized dynamo with an irrepressible energy and streetwise savviness. A self-absorbed opportunist and hedonist, he is an unrepentant skirt-chaser. Still, he’ll do anything for Judy—except consider her as a girlfriend. Seeking a strong singer/actor with some dance ability. Tap skills and/or drum playing ability a plus.
Vocal Type: Tenor

KAY KOVERMAN / MA LAWLOR (50’s)
Kay Koverman is a matronly monument of American womanhood. Her loyal service to America’s richest man was the only logical step up from having served a Republican president. Despite her patrician, WASP behavior, her actions demonstrate a compassionate maternal side.
Only in the dodgy world of child performers could the crass and morally dubious Ma Lawlor be considered an educator. Seeking an actress/mezzo soprano with traditional belt to C.
Vocal Type: Mezzo/Belter

L.B. MAYER (50’s – 60’s)
Mayer is a bespectacled owl of a man, though Napoleonic is his sense of value and mission as the head of the biggest movie studio in Hollywood and the richest man in America. He clings to respectability and class in response to his roots as a penniless, Yiddish-speaking junk man. Seeking a strong actor/singer.
Vocal Type: Baritone

BABY GUMM (plays ages 6 – 8) Plays Judy as a very young girl, and child on the MGM lot. Seeking a strong singer, with belt up to sustained D. Some tap ability a plus.

SHIRLEY TEMPLE (plays ages 6 – 8) Plays Shirley Temple and others. A blonde, curly-topped moppet that is as exquisitely adorable as a cherub in a Baroque painting. Seeking a strong singer/dancer. Must have tap ability.

YOUNG VIRGINIA GUMM (plays age 10) Plays the younger version of the middle Gumm sister and others. Strong singing voice. Must have dance and tap ability. Covers the roles of Baby and Shirley.
