BREAKDOWN
Camila Perichole — late 20s — Extremely beautiful. Began as an orphan, became a celebrated actress. A coquette: quick, smart, commanding, coy, sensual, brutal. Later in life suffers greatly; the actor needs to have emotional availability.
Madre Maria — 50s or 60s — Aging, but energetic. A genius and a visionary, ahead of her time. She is practical and pragmatic, always looking for opportunities to advance her causes, can come across as severe, but also has warmth.
Manuel — 20s — Comes from poverty, an orphan. He is a private person, who has great passion churning inside of him that he lets loose when not in public. He loves his brother deeply.
Esteban — 20s — Comes from poverty, an orphan. He is a simple man, an innocent. He loves his brother deeply. Later in the play he becomes stoical; the actor needs to have the capacity for great stillness and contained emotion.
Dona Clara — late 20s or 30s — Smart and impatient. Pampered and upper class. Possibly droll, but definitely fiery and outspoken. Later in life many tragedies befall her, and she winds up humbled and searching for a purpose in life. ROLE IS CAST
Pepita — early teens — An orphan. Religious and dutiful. She is passionately devoted to Madre Maria. Curious.
Don Andres et al — 40s — This actor needs to be versatile, changing roles sometimes on a dime. By turns masculine, effete, intellectual, innocent, earthy. Must be capable of tremendous gravitas. Must be funny. ROLE IS CAST
Uncle Pio/Narrator -- ROLE IS CAST
Dona Maria --ROLE IS CAST
