BREAKDOWN

Into The Woods
by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
Producer: Barrington Stage Company, Pittsfield, MA
Artistic Director: Julianne Boyd
Director: Joe Calarco
1st reh- May 28, 1st prev- June 19
Opening- June 22, Closing- July 13
Contract: LOA referenced to COST (Mainstage)

Description: A childless Baker and his wife endeavor to lift their family curse by journeying into the woods, where they encounter other classic fairy tale characters on similar expeditions. Their stories become entangled in unexpected ways, revealing what happens after “happily ever after,” and cautioning the audience to be careful what you wish for.

Character Breakdown:

All roles open to all ethnicities with an ultimate goal to be very color conscious when casting.
All actors must have an inherent understanding of comedy and also a deep well of honesty. Into the Woods is set in a fairy tale world but the world of the play and the people who inhabit it should feel very real.

The Narrator/The Mysterious Man- The narrator knows how to tell a good story. A people person. The Mysterious Man is very wise, has been very selfish, and holds many regrets.
Vocal range: G2-E4

Jack- A dreamer. Loves his pet cow like family. Poor but very hard working. His life is simple until a beanstalk up into the sky makes him see that the world is a much bigger, exciting, and terrifying place than he had ever imagined.
Vocal range: B2-G4

Little Red Riding Hood- Young and fierce. She spends a good deal of time alone, so she has learned how to take care of herself by necessity. Her tough exterior protects a good deal of vulnerability.
Vocal range: Bb3-F5

Jack’s Mother- A good mother. A hard worker. Her son’s constant dreaming frazzles her and scares her: How will he survive in a cruel world when she is gone?
Vocal range: Bb3-Gb5

The Baker- A simple, practical man. Dreams of nothing more than making a good enough living to support his family. He is desperate to have a child. He believes that as a husband he should be the provider and protector and initially doesn’t see his wife as a partner even though he loves her deeply. He often feels that he is not worthy of her.
Vocal range: Ab2-G4

The Baker’s Wife- Practical. Strong. Smart. Loving. Adventurous. She can take care of herself. Frustrated that her husband does not see her as an equal partner.
Vocal range: F3-G5

The Witch- Ferocious. Fabulous. Hilarious. Terrifying. Loving. She harbors deep resentment for how her life has turned out and will do anything to get what she needs to be who she knows herself to be. Her love and her pain can hurt those around her even when she doesn’t intend to.
Vocal range: F3-G5

Rapunzel- Has been shuttered away most of her life. This makes her dreams big and her needs strong. Her lack of contact with others has also made her eccentric and not equipped to deal with the harsh realities of the world outside the walls she has been hidden behind.
Vocal range: B3-A5

Cinderella- A dreamer. She has been shunned for a good deal of her life and is desperate for love and affection. She is also a naturally comic creature—a screwball comedy heroine stuck in a fairy tale.
Vocal range: G3-G5

Cinderella’s Prince/The Wolf- A handsome, confident, charming, reckless, privileged, Prince and a sexy, ravenous, charming, flesh-eating Wolf.
Vocal range: Bb2-Gb4

Rapunzel’s Prince- Charming, handsome, and confident like his brother but being second in line to the throne, he doesn’t have the same pressures of holding up a perfect public persona. So he is more easy going and more earnest and honest.
Vocal range: C#3-E4

Cinderella’s Stepmother- CAST Will also voice/play Little Red’s grandmother.

Florinda- Raised to believe she is perfect, should have only the best, and is better than others. She does not understand the difficulty of others who do not have her privilege, which makes her arrogant and cruel.
Vocal range: C4-Ab5

Lucinda- Raised to believe she is perfect, should have only the best, and is better than others. She does not understand the difficulty of others who do not have her privilege, which makes her arrogant and cruel.
Vocal range: C4-Ab5

The Steward- Very concerned with his personal duty to the royal family. Upright and cowardly.

Cinderella’s Mother- Loving, caring, kind. Will be doubled vocally by either Stepmother or The Witch.
Vocal Range: E4-F4

Fall Springs
by Niko Tsakalakos and Peter Sinn Nachtrieb
Producer: Barrington Stage Company, Pittsfield, MA
Artistic Director: Julianne Boyd
Director: Stephen Brackett

Description: Boulders, buildings and the occasional bartender are being swallowed into the ground due to fracking. And that’s only the beginning...The town of Fall Springs is cash-strapped but sits directly on top of America’s largest reserve of cosmetic essential oils. It has big dreams, but at what cost? With new fracking techniques being recklessly implemented, the ground beneath Fall Springs is crumbling and only a literal band of teenagers can save the day.

1st reh- July 16, 1st prev- August 9
Opening- August 14, Closing- August 31
Contract: LOA referenced to COST (Mainstage)

Overall casting notes:
Fall Springs is a very diverse town populated by an eclectic set of individuals.
Everyone is an odd, unique, misfit gem.
Everyone has heart.
In addition, the diversity is joyfully anachronistic (i.e. Parents and Children do not need to, and ideally won’t, look related to each other).
Finally, this musical is a comedy. Strong comedic chops needed for everyone!

Eloise Bradley
Our oddball hero. Aspiring Geologist. Reluctant leader. Potential Savior. Keyboardist*.
Eloise’s happiest times are when she’s collecting soil samples in the field or testing them in her makeshift secret lab (She has to hide her scientific work from her fact-phobic dad). Her worldview is very literal and data driven. Emotions come out a little strangely for her. But don’t underestimate her passion.
Age: 17 (but actor probably 18+). Any Ethnicity. Great comedy skills.
Voice: Pop/Rock Soprano.

Felix Cushman
The Cautious one. The Bass player*.
He’s deeply in love with Eloise and also lacks the social skills to successfully act on his feelings. His mother is the head of an oil drilling company and he often feels compelled to defend her actions to the others. Sometimes his insecurity gets the better of him and causes him to betray his friends.
Age: 17 (but actor probably 18+). Any Ethnicity. Great comedy skills.
Voice: Pop/Rock Tenor.

Vera Mariposa
The Jock. Guitar* and Lead Vocals
Resentful and angry about most everything. Fall Springs is too small for her. She longs for a place where she can rock out, train for the Olympic swimming team, and date lots of girls. Probably has Liz Phair and Joan Jett posters in her bedroom.
Age: 17 (but actor probably 18+). Any Ethnicity. Great comedy skills.
Voice: Pop/Rock Soprano, belter.

Cooper Mitford
The Livewire. Drums.*
Impulsive and unpredictable and enthusiastic and may have burned a few too many brain cells due to his penchant for huffing various household chemicals. Cooper is an adventure seeker, a risk taker, and adrenaline junkie. While perhaps not the brightest bulb on the chandelier, he is passionate and energetic and a goofball.
Age: 17 (but actor probably 18+.) Any Ethnicity. Great comedy skills.
Voice: Rock Tenor.
* Note: The four kids are in a band together. Actors will not need to actually have to play, but they should look like they know how.

Mayor Robert Bradley
Eloise’s single father and the Mayor of Fall Springs.
He’s got big dreams for his town and has put all his energy into their success. A nice bonus from his driven focus is that he can avoid any real emotions. He hates Science with an irrational passion, blaming it for the death of his wife. This has estranged him from his daughter with whom he has a very uncomfortable, awkward and distant relationship. This also leads him to frequently ignore glaring warning signs about dangers about to befall his town. He’s got a lot to learn.
Age: 40s-50s. Any Ethnicity. Great Comedy Skills.
Voice: Baritenor.

Beverly Cushman
Felix’s single mother. CEO of the Fall Springs Essential Oil Drilling Corporation.
Skillful, calculating, alluring and ruthless, Beverly’s bottom line is her bottom line. She is willing to do whatever it takes to boost her wealth and power. Beverly is a brilliant saleswoman and knows how to draw people in and make them fall under her spell and ignore any warnings. There’s nothing she wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice to get what she wants, and it’s scary and delightful to watch her try and get it. She would even steal the show if they don’t stop her.
Age 40-50s. Any Ethnicity. Great Comedy Skills.
Voice: Mezzo, belter.

Veronica Mitford
Cooper’s single mother.
Veronica is in charge of Fall Springs Real Estate and a Town Council Member. Neither really seems to stoke her fire. She loves all of Anne Rice’s novels and is also a huge fan of True Blood on HBO, and is ok with The Vampire Diaries on the CW. She craves sensuality and bloodthirstiness but hasn’t yet found that level of passion in Fall Springs.
Age: 40-50s. Any Ethnicity. Great Comedy Skills.
Voice: Mezzo.

Roberto Mariposa
Vera’s single father.
Roberto is head of the Fall Springs Convention and Visitors bureau. Roberto fell into hospitality after his initial dream, to be a professional dancer, came to an abrupt end due to a terrible and unfair audition process. Over the years, despite the fact that his body may have lost a good chunk of its tone, Roberto has not forgotten how he felt when he was moving and moving and moving. He’d like to find that feeling again.
Age: 40-50s. Any Ethnicity. Great Comedy Skills
Voice: Baritenor.

Noland Wolanske
Town Vagrant/Cassandra.
A former USGS geologist who worked with Eloise’s mother and was present at the time her death and who kind of lost his mind soon after. Something akin to Tom Waits meets the fisherman from Jaws. Gruff, cranky, smelly, broken, and also pretty much the only one in Fall Springs that Eloise can turn to when she needs help. He’s filled with a lot of wisdom, long anecdotes, and hard to decipher metaphors. The events of Fall Springs, however, offer him an opportunity for salvation.
Age: 50s. Any Ethnicity. Great Comedy Skills.
Voice: Baritone.
