SEEKING

Casting Equity performers for Baltimore Center Stage’s 2019-20 main stage season. Baltimore Center Stage encourages all ethnicities, genders and non-binary performers and performers with disabilities to auditions.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a one-minute monologue and an optional 16 bars of a song. An accompanist will be provided. An ASL interpreter will be provided.

BEATRIZ: Mexican-American, late thirties to early-forties

PEARL: African-American, sixteen

MO: Southern, in retirement

HIGGINS: also Southern, also in retirement

MANUEL: Peruvian, a day laborer, thirties to fifties

THOUGHTS OF A COLORED MAN
(by Keenan Scott II, runs Oct 10-Nov 10),

This production is being co-produced with Syracuse Stage in association with Brian Moreland and Ron Simons.
*If role has been cast actors will be seen for replacements.

PASSION: 30-32, A scholar from the inner city. A true urban guy. He is a Queens native and New York to his core. A smart, seasoned guy who has seen a lot in his life and is very in-tune with the world around him. He has an articulate, but edgy presence.

LOVE: Already cast.

LUST: Already cast.

HAPPINESS: Already cast.

ANGER: 25-28, A Harlem native, but lived and seen other places. Sports exposed him to a much bigger world. A former collegiate basketball player considered to be a jock. He carries a chip on his shoulder from not reaching the pros due to his knee injury. Has a rawness and heaviness in his personal life that brings a weight to all areas of his life. He is smarter than what you would expect.

DEPRESSION: Already cast.

DESPAIR: 50-55, A retired police officer. This man carries a steady, strict, authoritative presence. Tall and muscular with an empowering presence. Should have a refined roughness. Loves his family, but his internal demons holds him back from reaching his maximum potential with the relationships in his life.

WISDOM: 60-65, A man of dark complexion, African born. An immigrant to the United States. His accent is no longer as heavy as it once was when he was younger. Moved to America as a teenager. A heavy thinking man. Regal and confident, but equally humble. He posses a strength that can only be acquired by survived hardships over an extended period of time. Should have the essence of wisdom in body, beliefs and age.

DIONYSUS: divine son of Zeus and Semele, also called Bromius or Bacchus.

TIRESIAS: an old blind prophet

CADMUS: grandfather of both Dionysus and Pentheus, an old man

PENTHEUS: young king of Thebes, grandson of Cadmus, cousin of Dionysus

AGAVE: mother of Pentheus, daughter of Cadmus, sister of Semele

FIRST MESSENGER: a cattle herder

SECOND MESSENGER: an attendant on Pentheus

CHORUS OF BACCHAE: worshippers of Dionysus who have followed him from Asia.

SOLDIERS and ATTENDANTS around Pentheus.
