BREAKDOWN
Description: “As Much As I Can” is an immersive experience inviting audiences into the lives of four Black gay men as they explore complex relationships to faith, family, community and, ultimately, themselves.
Special Note: We are seeking actors who are singers, movers/dancers, and have experience in devised/immersive theatre.
GEORGE
Male, 20 - 30, African American. Gay, the hero of the play. Struggling to come to terms with his recent HIV-positive diagnosis. Sweet guy with a big heart who climbs a mountain of self-discovery by the play's end.
DELIUS
Male, 20 - 30, African American. Gay, George’s lover, HIV-positive. Closeted to his family and his community, struggles with acceptance. An extremely complex character — facing tremendous turmoil. Delivers gut-punching monologues.
MARCUS
Male, 20 - 30, African American. Gay, college student, receives a HIV-negative diagnosis in the beginning of the play. Funny but unexpectedly wise. Our how to navigate intimacy hero. Blows through the 4th wall throughout the script.
PASTOR ROBINS
Male, 30 - 70, African American. A man of stature in the community, delivers a long sermon. Seeking an actor adept with language who has tremendous poise and gravitas.
DOCTOR TOLSON
Male, 30 - 70, Caucasian. George’s doctor, delivers his HIV-positive diagnosis. Missed the empathy bus at the beginning but brings it home at the end.
VOYA
Female, 20 - 30, African American. Straight. A wise ass who is fiercely loyal to her friends. For George she feels like family. Has her own struggles and is trying to find her next big thing.
PATRICE
Female, 40 - 60, African American. Marcus’ mother, compassionate yet overbearing. Wants the best for her son but doesn't totally understand him. Represents the broader societal context. Has critical monologue that defines a theme.
SHAWNA
Female, 40 - 60, African American. Delius’ mother, struggles with acceptance of her son and of herself. Wishes things were different and struggles to connect with Delius.
