BREAKDOWN

HEDWIG
by John Cameron Mitchell / Music
& Lyrics by Stephen Trask
Rehearsals begin September 9, 2019.
Performances will run Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm from September 27 to October 13 (possible extension till October 20).

This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of internationally ignored song stylist Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth wall smashing East German rock 'n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just an angry inch. This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig in the form of a rock gig/standup comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band The Angry Inch. Using songs and monologues, Hedwig tells her story, which began in the former East Berlin where as Hansel he meets Luther, an American GI who promises to take the young man to the States on the condition that he switch his sex. After the bungled operation, Luther abandons newly named Hedwig in a Kansas trailer park, where she turns to music and meets geeky Tommy Speck, whom she takes under her wing and soon falls for. Tommy steals her songs, achieves rock star fame, and Hedwig is once again cast aside. She decides to demand redress and stalks Tommy's world tour, performing in the T.G.I. Fridays that are situated next door to his stadiums. Hedwig describes her life's search for The Origin of Love and her other half. It's a rocking ride, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

HEDWIG
Male. Late 20s – 50s. East German rock singer and front woman of The Angry Inch. Formerly Hansel, a slip of a girly boy who grew up in communist East Berlin, fell in love with an American GI - became Hedwig and underwent a botched sex change operation in order to marry and move to the states. Glamorous, charismatic and always commanding even when at her most bitchy or vulnerable. Has had high highs and low lows. Very strong rock tenor (high to B4). Must have a convincing East German accent. Actor must be able to dexterously shift from persona to persona (Hedwig’s mother, husband, rock icon ex-lover, Tommy Gnosis). Actor should have terrific physical stamina.

YITZHAK
Female. Late 20's – 40. Hedwig's Croatian male husband and roadie/back-up singer. He is Hedwig's vocal sparring partner- theirs is an emotional and at times abusive relationship. The actress playing Yitzhak should be believable as a butch male but one that chafes at the bonds of traditional masculinity and longs to explore his feminine, creative side. Very strong singer with rock and roll vibe. Wide vocal range a must (High belt to a G). Must have a convincing Balkan Accent. Actress should be able play basic percussion instruments - tambourine; maracas. We are looking for all races and ethnicities.
