BREAKDOWN

A modern adaptation of Sophocles’ classic work reduced to a 60 minutes performance to be performed at Miami-Dade County Public Schools and community spaces.

Antigone - 20’s to 30’s female, Niece of Kreon, Daughter of Oedipus. Breaks the law to honor her brother, Polynices. Audacious, highly intelligent, an outlier who is forced into the limelight by her own convictions. CAST

Ismene - 20’s-30’s female, Sister of Antigone. Not as bold as her sister, her fear of punishment prevents her from challenging Kreon’s law. Loyal, rational, an underdog who changes her allegiance when it is too late.

Hamon - 20’s-30’s male, Son of Kreon. Engaged to Antigone. Committed to justice even if it means challenging his father. Intellectually driven, his charismatic arguments border audacity.

Kreon - 40’s male, King of Thebes. Has taken power after a civil war almost brought the city to ruin. Committed to the Law and Justice. Charismatic, logical, charming and at times sarcastic.

Tiresias - 40’s to 50’s any gender identity, Blind Prophet. Councils Kreon, warning of terrors that will befall him for his unnatural actions. Clairvoyance that manifests in confidence, and empathy with the city of Thebes that is unleashed in a furious rage at Kreon. CAST

Guard - 20’s to 30’s male. Fears death, and Kreon, his commander. His willingness to “follow orders” is guided by Self-preservation, yet he is not devoid of humanity. The comedy of this role comes out of its pettiness and practicality.

Chorus - 40’s to 50’s male or female. In this version, played by a single actor. Advises Kreon and also rebukes him. Gives the audience context for the philosophical ideas that are pitted against each other by Sophocles.
