BREAKDOWN

ANNE FRANK ('Annelein') - female, (18-25), OPEN ETHNICITY. The eyes and the heart of the play. Emotionally wise beyond her years and with an unexpectedly cutting sense of humor, she has a thirst for every second of life. Plays Anne as both a pre-teen and a college student.

MARGOT FRANK – female, (18-25), OPEN ETHNICITY. Anne’s older sister. Far more rational. But in terms of maturity, she is the younger of the two – she needs Anne to process what’s happening to their family.

EDITH FRANK - female, (40-60), OPEN ETHNICITY. Anne’s strong, softspoken mother. She leads the family, balancing Otto’s pragmatism with her quiet sense of humor. But she can only take so much before she breaks.

OTTO FRANK ('PIM') - male, (40-60), OPEN ETHNICITY. Anne’s warm and measured father. He puts on a brave face for his family as he protects them in this crisis – but he learns that what they really need is his compassion.

PUBLISHER (PETER SCHIFF) - male, (35-45), OPEN ETHNICITY. He provides a sympathetic ear.

PETER VAN PELS - male, (18-25), OPEN ETHNICITY. Anne’s first love. Awkward and entitled, he learns how to connect with people through his relationship with Anne. He grows into a man during his time in the annex.

HERMANN VAN PELS ('PUTTI') male, (40-60), OPEN ETHNICITY. Peter’s well-meaning father. His sweet sense of humor is matched by his sense of duty. He does what’s best for his family, even when it gets hard.

AUGUSTE VAN PELS ('KERLI') -female, (40-60), OPEN ETHNICITY. Peter’s funny, fragile, mother. While hiding with the Franks, she is the first to lose her grip on her sanity.

MIEP GIES - female, (35-60), OPEN ETHNICITY. A friend of the Franks. She is the reason the Franks are able to find a hiding place, and she has a special connection with Anne, who sees through her stoicism, to her fear.

JAN GIES/ FRITZ PFEFFER/MAN IN DUST COAT - male, (35-60), OPEN ETHNICITY. Plays three different roles – Jan is a kindhearted supporter of the Franks and The Pels’. Fritz is a finicky dentist grieving being separated from his Christian wife. The Man in the Dust Coat represents the German population outside the annex.
