BREAKDOWN

Looking for four extremely versatile actors (of any race, religion or gender identification) who enjoy ensemble work, are comfortable with movement, who can handle soft German /Austrian accents and are ready to play any age character. The work will move quickly and require an all-in attitude. Rehearsals and most performances are held during the day.

And Then They Came for Me is a unique theatrical experience: a multimedia play that weaves videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during World War II. Ed was Anne Frank's first boyfriend and she wrote about him in the beginning of her now-famous diary. Mr. Silverberg barely escaped the Nazis before going into hiding in Belgium for 26 months. Eva Schloss was the same age as Anne Frank and lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam. Her family went into hiding the same day as the Frank family. And like the Frank family, they were also betrayed. On Eva's 15th birthday, her family was arrested by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. Eva and her mother survived and after the war her mother married Otto Frank (Anne's father). Part oral history, part dramatic action, part direct address, part remembrance.... This powerful play touches on many themes that are vital for young people to reflect upon today, including what can happen when hate and violence become normalized.

We’re gearing the show for ages 11 and up, and as with all MainStreet shows, it never talks down to the audience – the opposite – we believe that children are inherently imaginative and smart. For this production, we’re aiming to include senior citizens in the audience for our morning school performances as well as children.

YOUNG ED/PAPPY (Adult Actor 20 – 60) Young Ed is the boyhood incarnation of Helmuth Silberberg, an actual survivor of the Holocaust whose video testimony will be a part of the show. Pappy is Eva's father (see below)- a man of great courage, moral fortitude and kindness.

YOUNG EVA/ED'S MOTHER (Adult Actress 20 – 60) Young Eva is the girlhood incarnation of Eva Geiringer Schloss, an actual survivor of the Holocaust, whose video testimony will be a part of the show. This actor will also play Ed's mother, a middle-aged woman who must face the horrors of Nazi Germany.

ANNE FRANK/MUTTI (Adult Actress 20 – 60) The actor playing Anne Frank does not necessarily need to look like Anne Frank. The actor needs to be able to convey to us a sense of the energy and optimism of this young girl on the cusp of womanhood. MUTTI is Eva’s mother, who will have to face horrific circumstances beyond her greatest fears.

HITLER YOUTH/HEINZ/ED'S FATHER (Adult Actor 20 – 60)The actor who takes on the character of the Hitler Youth does not need to look like a Hitler Youth but needs to be able to convey the deep emotional commitment to those ideas. They also need to be able to embody the sensitivity of a sweet and gentle young man (Heinz) who was a painter and a musician and a scholar. And a father who faces the unimaginable.
