Male, 18-25, new boy to the school; physically athletic, confident beyond his years, and with a mesmeric charisma that David Starr is instantly attracted to; whilst being made captain of the football team. Maxie also gets cast as Bill Sykes in the school play. Not afraid to rise to the challenge of a bully. Pop tenor voice. Any ethnicity. *an offer has been made for this role*

Eddie Starr
Male, 30-49, David’s father; Kath’s husband; stuck in his ways; his main focus in life is his pigeons, which he keeps in the back yard. He doesn’t understand women and doesn’t really understand his son. A cab driver. Baritone voice. Any ethnicity. *an offer has been made for this role*

Aunt Val
Female, 30-39, Kath’s sister; David’s aunt; has had a string of unfulfilled relationships, adores David and is the person closest to him that understands him. Grounded and strong in her opinions yet open-minded. Sharp tongued. Alto belt voice. Any ethnicity. *an offer has been made for this role*

David Starr
Male, 18-25, witty, sharp, and strong minded; fashion aware and loves his music; in a world of conformity. David is searching for something else, physically not the natural athlete, he uses his wit to fight against the bullying he faces in school. He gets cast as Nancy in the school play as he has the best singing voice in the school. Pop tenor voice. Any ethnicity. *an offer has been made for this role*

Frances Bassey
Female, 18-25, David’s best friend since childhood; Frances also struggles with a bullying culture and faces racism for being black. She is a strong support for David, but not afraid to challenge him; strong-minded and sharp. Pop Belt voice. *an offer has been made for this role*

Kath Starr
Female, 30-45, David’s mother, doesn’t necessarily understand David’s humor but has a deep love for her son; trapped in a loveless marriage to Eddi; alto/mezzo belt with a big range. *an offer has been made for this role*

Marcia Tubbert
Female, 18-25, Female school bully who hangs out with Jason Lancaster and would not-so- secretly love to marry him. She has the frame of an Eastern European weightlifter and uses her physique to intimidate. Gets cast as Mr. Bumble in the school play. Alto/belt voice. *an offer has been made for this role*

Hamish McClarnon
Male, 35-39, Scottish drama teacher at David’s school; openly gay and confident man who is strict but fair and respected by the pupils; his encouraging teaching style is the opposite of his teaching nemesis, Bob Lord, the school PE teacher; musical theatre tenor voice; an offer has been made for this role. *an offer has been made for this role*

Chrissie Starr
Female, 18-25, David’s sister. Loves David deep down but struggles to show it. Hangs out with her new boyfriend, Squirrel, which takes up much of her time. Can’t wait to leave home and school and start her real life. Modern pop singer with mezzo soprano voice.

Dennis Gordon
Age 12 (to be played by a short young adult), cast as Oliver in the school play. Has a slight speech impediment, which gets worse when nervous or bullied.

Abigail Henson
18-25, Chrissie’s best friend. A larger framed young woman. She is attracted to David and not scared to show it. Modern pop alto/belt voice. *an offer has been made for this role*

Claire
An obsolete Helperbot 6. Model 6s have a more nuanced understanding of emotions and can use specialized language like slang. She can be impatient with less advanced models. Has sworn off long term emotional bonds.

James
Oliver’s former owner. Loves jazz and other outdated things. Was in his 30s when he first bought Oliver and in his 40s when he discarded him. This actor plays a variety of other characters in the show that the Helperbots interact with.

A disembodied, androgynous voice that is amplified through a microphone. Has an accent that is affected or possibly foreign.

Joan
Female, late 40s, a therapist and sex educator. Prefers to focus on the pleasurable things in life, but still has an overwhelming sense of rage at the world that sometimes bubbles to the surface. Survivor of sexual assault and an eating disorder. Meditates, does yoga, and wears mostly clothes/jewelry from India.

Judy
Female, 50s, Joan’s partner. Loves to be in control, especially of her image. Sleeps four hours a night, watches Fox news, and has a very successful career as an editor for a magazine. Recently been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and is madly in love with Joan.

Alicia
Female, 30ish, very attractive. Always finds a way to make noise no matter what she’s doing and enjoys being watched. Former beauty pageant star and child actor who had a mediocre career. Recently dumped by her ex who cheated on her and gave her an STD. Is still in love with him and feels an incredible amount of shame about it.

Ned
Male, 40s, chronically unlucky. Contemplated homicide after his wife left him for his younger brother. Became an alcoholic after the death of his parents. Found meditation after his AA sponsor killed himself. Is very excited for the retreat but is also contemplating murder again now that his brother and ex-wife are expecting a child.

Rodney
Male, mid 30s, fit and gorgeous. A yoga instructor who habitually has sex with his students and designs a line of vegan wallets. Is terrified of aging and death. Used his wife’s money to fund his own studio after being fired for sexual harassment. Wears a lot of man jewelry, but no wedding ring.

Jan
Male, 50ish, a Lutheran pastor from Finland. Curious and sweet, he desperately misses his dead son and is looking for answers. Uses pharmaceuticals to cope with the fear that nothing he does actually helps people and is at the retreat looking for answers. Has overestimated his fluency and comprehension of English.
