Breakdown

The roles of Joe Keller and Kate Keller have been pre-cast.

Chris Keller – late twenties – early thirties. Solidly built, a listener and truth teller. A family man who idolizes his parents, he will try to avoid confrontation when possible and is capable of immense affection and loyalty. He's an idealist with a social conscience and is uncomfortable with the success of his father’s business in the wake of WWII.

Ann Deever – late twenties – early thirties. Gentle, but despite herself capable of holding fast to what she knows which gives her an honest and strong-willed quality. She's smart, down-to-earth and practical - she knows what she wants and is emboldened by the strength of her convictions.

George Deever – late twenties – early thirties. Impulsive and short-tempered, he's on the edge of his self- restraint when we meet him. He speaks quietly, as though afraid to find himself screaming. Like a mistreated animal, his bitterness and skepticism can be momentarily quieted with gentle affection, but are quick to return at the slightest provocation.

Dr. Jim Bayliss – forties – fifties. Friend and neighbor to the Keller’s. A wry, self-controlled man, an easy talker, but with a wisp of sadness that clings even to his self-effacing humor. Inspired by Chris' idealism and frustrated with how his life has worked out, he dreams of an existence free of the stifling predictability of domestic life.

Sue Bayliss – forties – fifties. Married to Jim. A witty middle-aged woman prone to needling but affectionate. She is grounded in the practical realities of life and feels an obligation to protect her husband and their life from the distraction of Chris' idealism.

Frank Lubey – thirties. A pleasant, opinionated man, uncertain of himself, with a tendency toward peevishness when crossed, but always wanting it pleasant and neighborly. He's a harmless, simple man with little understanding of the world beyond his backyard.

Lydia Lubey – late twenties – early thirties. Frank’s wife and George’s former girlfriend. A robust girl prone to laughter, she's a picture of domestic bliss without a care in the world.

Bert – eight-ten. A neighborhood boy who's been tasked with being the block's policeman in a game invented by Joe Keller. He's not without a growing skepticism suggesting he knows he's not always on the receiving end of the truth, but has wide-eyed admiration and affection for Joe and he attacks his given responsibility with unbridled enthusiasm.
