BREAKDOWN

Ada and the Engine

Young and curious mathematician Ada Byron is caught between two worlds. Her mother is pushing for a prestigious marriage to Lord Lovelace, hoping to repair the damage Ada’s father, the late Lord Byron, imposed on the family name. But Ada sees the creative potential in the analytic engines created by her elder friend and scholar Charles Babbage. As pressures mount and feelings grow, these two form a partnership that will change the course of the future.

Rehearsals begin Monday, December 9, 2019. Rehearsal schedule is Monday through Saturday with Sundays off. Rehearsal times are Mondays through Fridays 7-11PM, and Saturdays 1-5PM and 6:30-9:30PM. Performances are Thursday, January 9, 2020 through Sunday, February 9, 2020 at Stage West, 821 W Vickery. Note: performances will be Thursday nights at 7:30, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 and Sunday matinees at 3:00.

Ada Byron Lovelace - 18 to 37. Curious, funny, brilliant, aware of her brilliance, stories, aware of her story. Never met her famous father. Tries to be a “good girl” but just cannot help her curiosity and love of all things impossible. A woman of our time stuck in hers.

Charles Babbage - 42-61. Ada’s soul mate, friend, mentor. Lauded genius of London. A holder of famous salons, and inventor, a mathematical scholar, a dreamer who just cannot seem to make his dreams into the metal they require to be real. Almost perfect for Ada. Almost.

Lady Anabella Lovelace - 41-60. Ada’s mother, harsh strict, jealous? Yes. But realistic. She has had a hard life largely due to Ada’sFather. Projects his sins on her. ALSO PLAYS Mary Sommerville - 53. Charles’ friend and colleague and Ada’s mentor. There are no women as successful and respected in science and math as her. Pragmatic, sharply friendly, someone who will tell you when you’re wrong.

Lord Lovelace - 28-47. A gentleman who becomes Ada’s husband.

Between Riverside and Crazy

Irrepressible ex-cop and recent widower Walter Washington is under a lot of pressure. He’s in an ongoing legal battle, clinging desperately to grievances from the past. Barely holding on to the palatial rent-controlled Manhattan apartment that he shares with his newly paroled son and a ragtag surrogate family who call him “Pops”, he is not ready to accept payout or surrender. But as tensions come to a head in a swirl of demands from family and friends, a final ultimatum from former NYPD colleagues causes “Pops” to draw the line and make some demands of his own.

Rehearsals begin Monday, August 3, 2020. Rehearsal schedule is Monday through Saturday with Sundays off. Rehearsal times are Mondays through Fridays 7-11PM, and Saturdays 1-5PM and 6:30-9:30PM. Performances are Thursday, August 27, 2020 through Sunday, September 27, 2020 at Stage West, 821 W Vickery. Note: performances will be Thursday nights at 7:30, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 and Sunday matinees at 3:00.

Oswaldo - Male. 20s-30s. Puerto Rican/Latino/Hispanic. Junior’s ex-con friend from rehab. Troubled, former addict. Trying to get his life together by eating clean and staying away from any of the substances that derail him. Alienated by his own family. Living in Pops’ house and looks on him as a father figure.

Lulu - Female. 20s-30s. Latina/Hispanic. Junior’s current girlfriend. Says she is a current college student studying accounting. Lives with Junior, holds tightly to this newfound family, and wants desperately to get married. Funny, good-hearted, and dedicated. She has retained her sweetness and naïveté despite the difficult choices she’s had to make.

Junior - Male. 30s. Black. Pops’ son and currently dating Lulu. Trying to work his way through life as best he can. At odds with Pops and is perhaps doing some illegal activity to make a few bucks. Stuck at the moment.

Detective Audrey O’Connor - Female. Late 30s. She is now an author who takes great pride her success and autonomy.
