Breakdown

A cast of 6 play all the characters in this imaginative adaption of the Newberry Award winning novel. The story (for those unfamiliar with the book) revolves around high school aged Meg Murry and her younger brother, who, with the help of some celestial beings, travel through time and space to rescue their father from evil forces that are holding him on a “dark” planet. Themes in the book and the play include good vs. evil, the power of love, and learning that your faults may actually also be your strengths. Looking for creative and generous actors who can bring all these well-known characters to life for our audiences! Actors of all ethnicities encouraged to audition.

The MainStreet Theatre Company is in its 6th season of producing high-quality Theatre for Young Audiences productions at the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga. The Lewis Family Playhouse is a 536 seat, state-of the-art proscenium theatre.

We do not provide housing! We will provide a small travel stipend for those people commuting between 50 and 65 miles from the theatre.

The play is not published. It is highly suggested that potential cast members be familiar with the novel.

**Most actors will play multiple roles. The following descriptions list the main ones.

MEG: Female, 20’s to play 12 years old.
Stubborn and strong-willed. She loves her family very much, but has an extra special bond with her brother Charles Wallace. She is intelligent but an underachiever, with a lot of problems getting along in school. Her greatest faults are her anger, impatience, and lack of self-confidence, but she channels and overcomes them, ultimately emerging victorious.

CHARLES WALLACE: Male or Female, 20’
s.to play 5 years old. Preferably small in stature.
Meg’s extraordinarily intelligent five-year-old younger brother. People think he is stupid because he doesn't talk. Charles Wallace is innocent but wise, a prodigy of exceptional mental and psychic gifts. His extraordinary bond with Meg is what saves him.

CALVIN O'KEEFE: Male, 20’s to play 14 years old
Bright, athletic, friendly and open-minded. A popular boy and talented athlete in Meg's high school who accompanies the Murry children on their adventure. Calvin comes from a large family that does not really care about him, but he nonetheless demonstrates a strong capacity for love and affection, and shows a burgeoning romantic interest in Meg. He is steadfast and honest.

ACTOR 1: Female, 40’s – 50’s:
Mrs. Murry - Meg and Charles’ Wallace’s mother. She is a scientist and, with Meg's father, comes up with the notion of the tesser, the wrinkle in time. She is greatly troubled by her husband's disappearance, though she has the ability to control her emotions for her children. She is also a loving mother who cooks meals for her family on her Bunsen burner.

Mrs. Who - The second of the three celestial beings who accompany the children on their adventure. She has a habit of using quotations from famous writers and thinkers because she finds it hard to verbalize her own thoughts, but the quotations usually shed light on the situation.

Aunt Beast - A tall, furry, many-tentacled inhabitant of the planet Ixchel. Aunt Beast, like all the creatures on Ixchel, lacks eyes and has no concept of light or vision. Aunt Beast possesses an inner goodness that heals Meg and teaches her about love.

ACTOR 2: Male or Female, 30’s – 50’s
Mrs. Whatsit - The youngest of the three celestial beings who accompany the children on their adventure. We are first introduced to her as a tramp who seeks shelter from a storm in the Murrys' warm kitchen. She is the best at explaining things to the children.

Man with the Red Eyes - A robot-like inhabitant of Camazotz who tries to hypnotize Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin in the CENTRAL Central Intelligence building. The Man, like all of Camazotz, is totally controlled by the power of IT.

ACTOR 3: Male, 40’s – 50’s
Mr. Murry - Meg and Charles’ Wallace’s father. He is a physicist who works for a top-secret government agency on time travel experiments. During one experiment, he is captured and imprisoned on the dark planet of Camazotz.

Mrs. Which - The oldest of the three celestial beings who accompany the children on their adventure, and also their leader. She has the particular talent of wrinkling time and space in order to let the children travel great amounts of distance to far planets. Mrs. Which has difficulty materializing and in the play is depicted by a light and a voice.
