BREAKDOWN
There might be further doubling with this cast. Please let us know if you play any instruments. The fairies will be cast from local children.
THESEUS/OBERON. Male-identifying. Any ethnicity. Late 30-40’s. The Duke, THESEUS, is used to getting his own way. His love for Hippolyta challenges this. Commands the room as he commands Athens. OBERON, the King of the Fairies, is powerful, magical, but stubborn. He amuses himself by playing with the humans and battling with Titania.
HIPPOLYTA/TITANIA. Female-identifying. Any ethnicity. Late 30-40’s. HIPPOLYTA is an Amazon warrior Queen, betrothed (possibly against her will) to Theseus. Strong, likes being in control. TITANIA, the Queen of the Fairies, is a fiery but sensitive spirit who cares deeply for her fellow fairies. Much like her husband, she is stubborn and not eager to back down from a fight.
PUCK. Any gender identity or gender-neutral. Any ethnicity. 20s-50s. Oberon’s right-hand hench person. A troublemaker, even if it’s not always intentional. Dynamic, mischievous and fun. The devil on your shoulder, who tells you to have another…. The link to the audience from the woods. Energetic, silly, even otherworldly (magic and circus skills a plus) and great with text.
BOTTOM. Male-identifying. Any ethnicity. 30s-40s. The confident-to-a-fault weaver who wants to play all the parts. Guileless, tries too hard to impress. Not a great sense of self. Plays Pyramus in the Mechanical’s play. Great comic timing, excellent with language.
HERMIA. Female-identifying. Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. HERMIA, leads with her heart. She is ready to be an adult and break out from under her controlling Father/Mother. She is earnest and quick on her feet. She knows her own mind.
HELENA. Female-identifying. Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. HELENA is Hermia’s best friend and devoted to Demetrius. Book smart, but not smart when it comes to love. She is sensitive and clever.
LYSANDER. Male-identifying. Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. LYSANDER is a young Athenian in love with Hermia. Strong-willed romantic lover, will go to great lengths to be with Hermia. A little clueless when it comes to the real world.
DEMETRIUS. Male-identifying. Any ethnicity. 20s-30s. DEMETRIUS, also in love (maybe) with Hermia, or is it because she’s unavailable? He used to be in love with Helena. He’s Dad-Approved, and a little spoiled. A bit full of himself and not very self-aware when it comes to what he really wants.
QUINCE. Any gender-identity. A carpenter, Director of the Rude Mechanical’s play. Cogsworth in human form. Type A. Optimistic that the play will turn out well.
SNOUT. Any gender-identity. A welder and one of the Rude Mechanicals. Not the brightest crayon in the box. Very good-natured. Wall in the Mechanicals’ play. Very literal and not nuanced.
SNUG. Any gender-identity. A joiner, and member of the Mechanicals. Not a great memorizer, but very kind-hearted. He plays Lion in Mechanicals’ play, and is afraid his roaring will frighten the audience.
FLUTE. Male-identifying. The bellows-mender. Plays Thisbe, a young love-struck maiden. The youngest of the Mechanicals. A bit naive and committed to his role.
EGEUS. Any gender-identity. 40s-60’s. EGEUS is Hermia’s parent. Overly protective and stubborn. Doesn’t want to let Hermia grow up or make her own decisions.
Some roles have offers out. We are still looking for possible replacements.
