Ridgefield to Screen the Met's CARMEN

Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine reprises her remarkable portrayal of opera's ultimate seductress in a LIVE simulcast presentation of The Metropolitan Opera's production of Carmen. A triumph in her 2017 debut performances, Margaine shares the stage with impassioned tenors Yonghoon Lee and Roberto Alagna as her lover, Don José. Omer Meir Wellber and Louis Langrée share conducting duties for Sir Richard Eyre's powerful production, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere! Carmen comes to The Ridgefield Playhouse in a live simulcast in HD Saturday, February 2 at 12:55pm, part of Atria Senior Living Classical Series with support from Whistle Stop Bakery, underwritten by Jeanne Cook, Liz and Steven Goldstone, & Sabina and Walter Slavin.

Composer Georges Bizet and librettists, Henri Meilhac, Ludovic Halevy set their opera Carmen in Spain, in a world inhabited by gypsies, smugglers, factory workers and various ne'er do wells. It was groundbreaking in its realism and though initially misunderstood by critics, who weren't used to seeing such people center stage, has become one of the most popular operas of all time. Known for songs like "Toréador Song" and "Habanera" Carmen crossed the boundary from high to popular culture.

The Metropolitan Opera is a vibrant home for the most creative and talented singers, conductors, composers, musicians, stage directors, designers, visual artists, choreographers, and dancers from around the world. The Ridgefield Playhouse offers free tickets to The Metropolitan Opera in HD series to students 18 and younger as a way for parents to introduce their children to the arts. FREE tickets are also available to students 18 and younger for Live in HD screenings of The Bolshoi Ballet and National Theatre of London.
