Final Performances Of Arthur Miller's THE PRICE at Westport Community Theatre

Last Sunday's performance of Arthur Miller's The Price had the audience on its feet and cheering. Director John Atkin is hardly surprised.

"Although perhaps not as well known as other Miller plays, The Price still has all the powerful punch of his better-known classics," he says, "And with stage veterans Rich Masotti, Kitty Robertson, Fred Tisch, and Patrick Duffy, I am fortunate to have assembled one of the strongest casts in the local theatre scene. Night in and night out they bring every emotion and nuance of Miller's writing to the audience."

The demanding roles may be one reason The Price is seldom done in community theatre. Another reason may be the demands of the set, a brownstone attic cluttered with antique furniture and specific items that are hard to get, like a working gramophone and a full-size standing harp.

The time is 1968, and the New York City brownstone that used to be the Franz family home is about to be torn down. The Franz brothers, Victor and Walter, who have been estranged for years, now must meet to sell off the family estate. The forced reunion ignites emotional fireworks as they revisit the issues that have kept them apart, with conflicting memories of what happened. Caught in the crossfire are Victor's wife Esther and an aged furniture dealer, Gregory Solomon, who has come to put a price on all that painful history."I'm honored that WCT has again entrusted me to bring me to bring Arthur Miller's brilliant writing to the stage," says Atkin, whose production of A View From the Bridge last year was the best-attended show of the season.
