While Duke Ling of Jin serves on the throne, General TU’AN Gu deceives him into killing his virtuous subject ZHAO Dun and ZHAO’s whole family of 300 members. ZHAO has a son named ZHAO Shuo, who is Duke Ling of Jin’s son-in-law and commits suicide by imperial edict. But the princess has gotten pregnant and gives birth to a son, whom we call the orphan after imprisonment. The orphan is expected to take revenge, yet, TU’AN remains very alert. There is a mountebank by the name of CHENG Ying, who often visits ZHAO Shuo’s house with plans to deliver the orphan out of danger when seeing such grave injustice. The princess entrusts the baby to CHENG’s care before her death and General HAN Jue lays down his life for the sake of justice, making unknown the orphan’s whereabouts, and TU’AN orders the killing of all babies aged below half a year in the state. Imperial minister GONGSUN Chujiu, who has retreated to secluded woods, rises to his full height and smites the table when hearing what CHENG has said, and they devise a stratagem together. The next day CHENG denounces GONGSUN, who must endure torture by TU’AN, who finds the “orphan.”. The baby gets killed, GONGSUN kills himself by dashing his head against the step and CHENG has to swallow his sobs in silence.
The real Chinese orphan is saved, and tens of thousands of babies in the Jin State, as well as their parents, escape from their inevitable doom. 20 years later, a new king accedes to the throne and CHENG tells the orphan the truth. The orphan presents a memorial to the new king and arrests TU’AN. The ZHAO Family get revenge with justice being upheld, CHENG bursts into loud sobbing—for his son that had died 20 years ago and his wife also died from sorrow.
