A double-bill of two acts. In THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, adapted for the stage by Stephen Vincent Benet from his 1936 short story, a New Hampshire farmer sells his soul to the Devil and when he seeks to get out of the deal is defended in court by Daniel Webster, a fictional version of the famous statesman, lawyer, and orator.. TRIAL BY JURY a 30-minute comic opera, was Gilbert & Sullivans first hit, leading to a career for their partnership that produced the classics THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, HMS PINAFORE, THE MIKADO and many others. Come for the greatest orator of early America arguing contract law with Satan, stay for the riotous musical farce with a plot too ridiculous to summarize.
