Birdland Announces January 2019 Schedule

Birdland will kick-off their exciting month of programming with the following acts:

Gabrielle Stravelli at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that singer Gabrielle Stravelli will perform in concert. For this engagement, Ms. Stravelli will celebrate the release of her newest album, "Pick Up My Pieces: The Music of Willie Nelson." The cd is dedicated to the music and life of the "Red Headed Stranger," and covers the full spectrum of Nelson's catalogue: from early hits like "Three Days" and "Blame It On The Times" to favorites from his blockbuster album of American standards like "Stardust," and eternal classics like "Crazy" and "Nightlife." Stravelli will weave stories from Nelson's famously colorful personal life and storied 50-plus year career, while honoring and reimagining the music of one of America's greatest songwriters.

Greg Ruvolo Big Band Collective

The Greg Ruvolo Big Band Collective merges seasoned New York City jazz veterans with young, up-and-coming, future musical giants. This performance will feature an exciting blend of selections from the Great American Songbook, jazz standards, and original compositions in the modern Big Band style. The group's resumes span the spectrum of the entertainment business-- from SNL to Frank Sinatra, Steeley Dan to Ray Charles, and the big bands of titans like Buddy Rich, Gerry Mulligan, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Count Basie.

Kurt Elling Sings The Heroes: Classic Material for Jazz Voice with Special Guests

GRAMMY winner Kurt Elling is among the world's foremost jazz vocalists. He won the DownBeat Critics Poll for fourteen consecutive years and was named "Male Singer of the Year" by the Jazz Journalists Association on eight occasions. An international jazz award winner, he has also been GRAMMY nominated a dozen times. Kurt will be joined by Stu Mindeman (piano), Clark Sommers (bass), Ulysses Owens (drums) with special guests James Morrison (trumpet) and Troy Roberts (sax).

Ulysses Owens Jr.

Owens has established himself as a leader in his generation of jazz artists, admired for his sensitive, fiery and complex playing, vivid display of textural nuance, and gift for propelling a band with charisma and integrity. Both humble in person and imposing behind a kit, he is a graduate of the inaugural Jazz Studies Program at The Juilliard School, a two-time Grammy Award winner, and he earned his stripes as a member of bassist Christian McBride's acclaimed trio and the driving force of McBride's big band.

Frank Catalano Quartet at the Birdland Theater

The Chicago Tenor sax titan Frank Catalano returns to Birdland Theater. Frank Catalano has become a distinctive

improviser, prolific composer, patented inventor, brand ambassador, and unparalleled collector of vintage saxophones. With his distinctive voices, both in speech and on saxophone, Frank exudes infectious enthusiasm. He has been described as a traveling locus of creative energy - seemingly interested in, and good at everything.

Matthew Whitaker Quartet

Born in 2001, Matthew Whitaker's love for playing music first began at the young age of 3, after his grandfather gave him a small Yamaha keyboard. At 9, Matthew began teaching himself how to play the Hammond B3 organ. Four years later, he became the youngest artist to be endorsed by Hammond-in its 80+ year history. He was also named a Yamaha Artist at 15, becoming the youngest musician to join the stellar group of jazz pianists. He's already toured both here in the US and abroad, performing before The Youth Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in NYC, and on other world renowned stages, including: Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC; SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco; The John F. At just 23 years of age Veronica Swift is being recognized as one of the top young singers in jazz. The child of jazz vocalist Stephanie Nakasian and the late bebop pianist Hod O'Brien, Veronica has already appeared at Lincoln Center, Telluride Jazz Festival, Blues Alley, The Jazz Cruise, and Birdland, performing with Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Esperanza Spalding, Joe Lovano, Bob Dorough, Paquito d'Rivera, and other established jazz artists.

John Beasley Monk'estra Septet

In the course of three decades, Mack Avenue recording artist John Beasley has carved an enviable reputation - or actually, two reputations. First and foremost, he is an uncommonly versatile, unerringly exciting pianist who has worked with such music icons as Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard - playing in the bands of both these trumpet legends while still in his 20s. But Beasley is also an accomplished composer, and a distinctive arranger who works regularly with in film and television, earning five GRAMMY nominations and an Emmy nod along the way. And he has worked extensively on soundtracks, primarily those of famed film scorer Thomas Newman, including the James Bond hits Spectre and Skyfall.

Melissa Aldana Quintet at the Birdland Theater

Still in her 20's, Chilean saxophonist and composer Melissa Aldana has had a remarkably rapid evolution from 6-year-old sax prodigy to, "bold new talent," (NPR) and "...one of the more exciting young tenor saxophonists today." (New York Times) As a child, Aldana studied with her renowned saxophonist father Marcos Aldana. In 2007 she moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music. In 2013 she became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American ever to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. She is also a recipient of the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center and a double recipient of the Altazor Award, Chile's prestigious national arts prize. Melissa has released four recordings as a leader, most recently, "Back Home."

Maria Schneider Orchestra

Maria Schneider's numerous honors include 5 Grammy Awards, the USA's highest distinction in jazz, "NEA Jazz Master," an honorary doctorate from the University of Minnesota, and over 80 DOWNBEAT and Jazz Journalist Awards for her stunning 18-piece ensemble, their recordings, and Schneider's compositions. Critics have described Schneider's music as "evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization." This group is preparing to record again in 2019 and will be performing many of these unrecorded works in this one-night-only engagement. Sean Jones "Dizzy Spellz" at the Birdland Theater

Sean Jones has quickly established himself as one of the most outstanding and innovative trumpeters and composers on today's scene. Apprenticing with such legendary figures as Gerald Wilson, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath and Nancy Wilson, he served as lead trumpeter with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra from 2004-2010. In 2011 he toured internationally with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter ('Tribute to Miles' tour).

Marcus Roberts & The Modern Jazz Generation

A 2014 CBS 60 Minutes profile, "The Virtuoso," traced blind Jacksonville native pianist Marcus Roberts from his early roots at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to his remarkable career as a modern jazz musician. At age 21, Roberts toured with Wynton Marsalis for six years before striking out on his own. His recordings include solo piano, duets, and trio arrangements of jazz standards as well as symphony orchestra recordings. Roberts is an accomplished composer - with commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center, Chamber Music America, and ASCAP - and an accomplished educator on the faculty of Florida State University.

Alicia Olatuja "Intuition: Songs from the Minds of Women" at the Birdland Theater

Praised by the New York Times as "a singer with a strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage," St. Louis native Alicia Olatuja has been astounding audiences with her exquisite vocals and artistic versatility. She entered the national spotlight performing at President Obama's Second Inaugural. In addition to touring with her band in support of her first solo album, Timeless (2014), Alicia has performed around the world alongside Chaka Khan, BeBe Winans, Christian McBride, and Dr. Lonnie Smith, as well as being a featured vocalist with composer/pianist Billy Childs' "Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro" project.

Roberta Donnay and the Prohibition Mob Band

Veteran vocalist Roberta Donnay, whose new album "My Heart Belongs to Satchmo-a collection of tunes from the Louis Armstrong songbook of the 1920's-1930's-is drawing rave reviews. A versatile performer with a wide range of platforms, Donnay has written, produced and sang songs that have appeared on television ("One Life to Live," "All My Children," "The Young & The Restless" and "Nash Bridges," among others) and motion pictures or documentaries ("Pie Lady of Pie Town," "Last of the Great Record Stores," "Journey of the Universe," and "Reservoirs of Strength").

Steve Slagle A.M. Quartet at the Birdland Theater

Saxophonist,Flutist and composer Steve Slagle makes his home in New York City. His many original compositions are published by Slagle Music, BMI worldwide. Steve was musical director of the Mingus Big Band for many years, and wrote many of the bands arrangements as well as with Joe Lovano's Nonet. He has received two Grammy Awards for recordings with each of those groups, and continues his association with them. As a leader, Steve concentrates on new sounds and new compositions with his original voice.

Monty Alexander

In a career spanning six decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation for exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. Monty has performed and recorded with a wide array of renowned artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Bill Cosby, Natalie Cole, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare and others. As a leader, Monty has recorded over 60 albums to date, and has reinterpreted the music of a diverse collection of his favorite artists including Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, and Bob Marley. Monty's Harlem Kingston ensemble seamlessly melds the sounds of a classic jazz quartet with a Jamaican rhythm section.

Darrell Grant's Black Art @25 Quartet at the Birdland Theater

Since the release of his debut album Black Art, selected one of 1994's top ten jazz CD's by the New York Times, Darrell Grant has built an international reputation as a pianist, composer, and educator who channels the power of music to make change. He has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe in venues ranging from Paris's La Villa jazz club to the Havana Jazz Festival. Dedicated to themes of hope, community, and place, Grant's compositions include his 2012 Step by Step: The Ruby Bridges Suite honoring the civil rights icon and The Territory which explores Oregon's landscape and history. Since moving to Portland, Oregon he has been named Portland Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalist Association, received a Northwest Regional Emmy, and has been named the 2019 Portland Jazz Master. Grant is a Professor of Music at Portland State University where he directs the Leroy Vinnegar Jazz Institute.

Pianist, vocalist and composer Kelly Green is excited to release her new record Volume One with the Kelly Green Trio on December 5th, 2018. A follow up to her 2017 debut Life Rearranged, which featured luminaries Christian McBride and Steve Nelson, Volume One presents the talented songstress at home with her long-standing trio consisting of Alex Tremblay (bass) and Evan Hyde (drums). Ann Hampton Callaway: The Linda Ronstadt Songbook

Tony nominee Ann Hampton Callaway, one of the leading pop/jazz singers of our time, has created an exciting night of songs and stories in celebration of one of America's most beloved artists, Linda Ronstadt. On the heels on Ann's symphonic/PAC triumph, The Streisand Songbook, this show celebrates the many faces of love in Ronstadt's iconic songs from her Stone Poney Days like "Different Drum" and "Long Long Time" to pop/rock classics like "You're No Good," and "Desperado" to unforgettable classics from her three Nelson Riddle albums like "What's New" and "Am I Blue," to her iconic duets which Callaway will perform with her brilliant MD, Billy Stritch. David Bixler Auction Project featuring Arturo O'Farrill

Fusing Celtic, jazz and Afro-Latin influences, super group The Auction Project-led by alto saxophonist, flutist, and composer David Bixler, and featuring Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Arturo O'Farrill-create a surprising, richly textured and thoroughly enjoyable sound. The Auction Project explores how a traditional fiddle phrase fits atop a breezy, post-bop groove as this sextet makes history and stakes out uncommon musical territory. Joe Alterman at the Birdland Theater

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Joe Alterman studied music at New York University, where he received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Jazz Piano Performance. In addition to performances with Houston Person, Les McCann and his own trio, among others, Alterman has performed at many world renowned venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland and New York's Blue Note, where Alterman has opened, many times, for Ramsey Lewis. Only 29 years old, Alterman has released four critically-acclaimed albums, his most recent being 2017's "Comin' Home To You".

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that singer Jonathan Karrant will make his debut on the new stage. Karrant will be presenting songs from his new live album recorded in Las Vegas at one of the top 10 performing art centers in the world; The Smith Center. Jonathan headlines several of the finest music venues in Las Vegas and beyond. The new record is a collection of standards from iconic favorites to obscure tunes that evoke the emotion of Jonathan's soul and style. First week of John Pizzarelli's 2-week engagement with the John Pizzarelli Big Band

John Pizzarelli charms audiences with his warmth, sense of humor, and musical chops. Through his multi-faceted career as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader, the son of the legendary New Jersey native guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, has become one of the most recognizable faces and voices in contemporary jazz for his interpretations of classic standards, romantic ballads and the cool jazz flavor he brings to his performances and recordings. While maintaining a busy touring schedule, John also founded "Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli" a nationally syndicated radio program co-hosted with his wife, Broadway star Jessica Molaskey.

Ken Peplowski Quartet at the Birdland Theater

Ken Peplowski has recorded approximately 50 CDs as a soloist, and close to 400 as a sideman - some of the artists he's performed/recorded with include Charlie Byrd, Mel Torme, Rosemary Clooney, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, Hank Jones, Peggy Lee, Bill Charlap, Woody Allen, Benny Goodman, and Madonna. He travels at least half of every year, playing clubs, concert halls, colleges, and pops concerts. He has headlined the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, the Blue Note, and Dizzy's Club amongst many other venues. Ken's CDs on the Capri label, "Noir Blue", "In Search Of", and "Maybe September" were released to great critical acclaim and massive airplay. He has recorded music as diverse as Italian and French folk songs, avant-garde jazz, pop, and classical music.

Rajiv Jayaweera

Rajiv jayaweera is a Sri Lankan jazz drummer and composer who grew up in Melbourne, Australia. He has lived in New York City for the past seven years and has performed at Birdland many times with The Louis Armstrong Eternity Band and vocalist, Cyrille Aimée. For this show, he will present his own band, playing an eclectic set of his original compositions. His music covers a wide range of styles, drawing on his experiences from around the world and mixing influences from Sri Lanka, Australia and beyond.
