Bassem Youssef, Noche Flamenca, Meow Meow, The Chekhov Project & More Take Over Joe's Pub In January 2019

In January 2019, Joe's Pub presents its annual slate of showcases coinciding with APAP|NYC 2019, the annual Association of Performing Artists Presenters conference drawing presenters from around the world, January 4-8. The month will also include the fourth installment of Under the Radar + Joe's Pub: In Concert, a collaborative series highlighting multidisciplinary artists at the intersection of music and theater during The Public Theater's innovative Under the Radar Festival, January 3-13.

Joe's Pub is one of New York City's greatest venues for live music and a haven for performing artists making genre-defying work. Every January, Joe's Pub redoubles those efforts for APAP|NYC by programming a slate of showcases that echoes the expansiveness and quality of the venue's year round calendar. The lineup includes singer-songwriter Jill Sobule; internationally renowned comedian and writer Bassem Youssef; a double bill with jazz vocalist Michael Mayo and folk-roots duo Anna & Elizabeth; ukulele virtuoso Taimane; legendary flamenco company Noche Flamenca; post post-modern dance theater Megan Williams Dance Projects; a double bill of string quartet Sons of Serendip and Austin sister duo Delle Sorelle; and a Riot Artists showcase with Paris Combo and Nachito Herrera.

Under the Radar + Joe's Pub: In Concert kicks off with international siren and comedienne extraordinaire Meow Meow bringing her subversive and sublime cabaret performance all the way from Australia. New York City duo The Illustrious Blacks offer up HYPERBOLIC!, a technicolored explosion of fashion, performance, and music. Penny Arcade, New York's undisputed queen of the underground, brings B!D!F!W!, her timeless and passionate rock n' roll anthem celebrating free speech. Astrov's Lounge: Music from The Chekhov Project re-assembles the musicians of The Chekhov Project, a collective of theater-makers and musicians led by directors Brian Mertes and Melissa Kievman.

Over the last 15 years, The Public's Under the Radar Festival (UTR) has presented over 255 companies from 45 countries. It has grown into a landmark of the New York City theater season and is a vital part of The Public's mission, providing a high-visibility platform to support artists from diverse backgrounds who are redefining the act of making theater. Widely recognized as a premier launching pad for new and cutting-edge performance from the U.S. and abroad, UTR has presented works by such respected artists as Elevator Repair Service, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Gob Squad, Belarus Free Theatre, Guillermo Calderón, and Young Jean Lee. These artists provide a snapshot of contemporary theater: richly distinct in terms of perspectives, aesthetics, and social practice, and pointing to the future of the art form.
