Young People's Concerts Continue With ANIMALS INTO SONG- THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN

The 96th season of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) will continue on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with "Animals into Song - The Cunning Little Vixen," the second program in this season's series of YPCs, Music Across Borders. Conducted by Jakub Hr?ša, the program will explore how music can depict animals and settings, exemplified by Janá?ek's The Cunning Little Vixen Suite, featuring puppets designed and operated by students from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, led by ArtsConnection teaching artist Nehprii Amenii.

The program will also feature two works by Philharmonic Very Young Composers: 11-year-old Melody Zhang's piece for quintet will depict an animal, and 11-year-old Nilomi Weerakkody will cue the Orchestra in a layered soundscape evoking a sense of place. The quintet will also demonstrate how musical instruments can imitate animal sounds suggested by the audience. The program is hosted by New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist Justin Jay Hines and directed by Doug Fitch, who directed the Philharmonic's staged production of The Cunning Little Vixen in 2011.

Created by New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers (VYC) Artistic Director Jon Deak - a composer and former Philharmonic Associate Principal Bass - the VYC program enables students from diverse backgrounds to compose music to be performed by Philharmonic musicians, sometimes by the full Orchestra.

Attendees are invited to arrive early to take part in YPC Overtures on the Grand Promenade and upper tiers of David Geffen Hall, at which children can meet Philharmonic musicians, try out orchestral instruments, make their own puppets, participate in a Very Young Composers interactive activity, and hear Philharmonic musicians perform an animal-themed work written by 12-year-old Very Young Composer Tristan Hu.

Jakub Hr?ša is also conducting Janá?ek's The Cunning Little Vixen Suite (arranged by Charles Mackerras) in the New York Philharmonic program that also features works by Prokofiev and Rimsky-Korsakov, January 10-12, 2019.

Single tickets to Young People's Concerts start at $15; all tickets include admission to YPC Overtures. (Ticket prices subject to change.)
